한국의 고등학교 도서관은 어떤 공간이 되어야 할까? 건축가는 성암국제무역고등학교의 동관 1층 도서관 리모델링 프로젝트를 앞두고 질문을 던졌다. 기존의 도서관 공간은 전형적인 학교 건물에 위치하며 벽 뒤에 숨은 채 교내 다른 공간과 단절되어 있었다. 학생들이 열을 맞추어 정렬된 도서관 안에서 정해진 배치에 따라 정해진 행위를 하게 되는 공간이었다. 학생들은 수업 외 자유롭게 머물고 교류할 수 있는 중심 공간을 원했고, 건축가는 도서관 리모델링을 통해 새로운 가능성을 지닌 공간을 제시했다.

 

리모델링한 도서관은 단순히 책을 보는 공간이 아니라 학생들의 다양한 요구와 활동을 품는 공간이 됐다. 학생들이 쉬는 시간 동안 지친 마음을 편하게 명상하고, 방과 후 자신만의 자리를 만들 수 있는 사랑방 역할의 공간이 되길 바랐다. 이를 통해 도시 속 공원 생태계를 의미하는 도서관의 테마를 이끌어 내며 ‘숲도서관’이라는 이름의 공간이 됐다. 내외부를 단절시키던 불필요한 외벽을 허물고 전면창, 야외 테라스를 설치하였다. 새롭게 조성된 실내 조경은 자연을 통해 도서관의 외피의 경계를 형성하며, 운동장을 향해 개방되어 책과 자연이 어우러진 공간이 됐다. 다양한 형태의 좌석 배치는 기존의 경직된 질서를 깨고 자유롭게 흩뿌려진 공간 사이에서 자신만의 자리를 찾아 갈 수 있게 한다. 새롭게 단장된 도서관은 더 이상 벽 뒤에 숨겨진 공간이 아니다. 학생들이 책을 읽고 담소를 나눌 수 있는 대표 공간으로 거듭나 학생들에게 즐거운 장소를 경험하는 기회가 됐다.

What should a high school library in Korea be like? The architects posed this question as they approached the remodeling project of the first-floor library in the east wing of Seongam International Trade High School. The existing library was situated in a typical school building, hidden behind walls and disconnected from other areas within the school. It was a space where students, aligned in rows, engaged in predetermined activities according to a set layout. Students desired a central area where they could freely linger and interact beyond the structured confines of the library. Through the remodeling project, the architects aimed to imbue the library with new possibilities.

 

The remodeled library has been transformed to not only serve as a place to read books but also accommodate the various needs and activities of the students. The goal was for it to be a space where students could comfortably meditate during breaks and create their own cozy spots, akin to a "love nest." This led to the library adopting the theme of an urban park ecosystem, and it was named the “Forest Library.” Unnecessary external walls that disconnected the interior from the exterior were removed, and full-length windows and an outdoor terrace were installed. The newly created indoor landscaping defines the boundaries of the library's exterior through nature, opening toward the playground and creating a space where books and nature harmonize. The scattered seating arrangements break away from the rigid order of the past, allowing individuals to find their own spots. The revamped library is no longer hidden behind walls; it has evolved into a representative space where students can read books and engage in conversations. It provides students with an opportunity to experience a joyful place.
