에사 드 케이로스 중등학교에는 모든 날씨 조건에서 사용할 수 있는 실내 체육 활동을 위한 공간이 필요했다. 건축가는 학교의 건물들이 반세기 이상 지속된 역사적인 건물인 점을 신중하게 분석하여 기존 환경을 훼손하지 않도록 20세기 중반의 건축 양식의 맥락에서 신축 체육관 건물의 디자인 방향을 계획했다. 균일한 2층 높이의 직육면체의 매스 위로 경사 지붕이 얹혀져 있는 기존 건물들과는 달리, 전통적인 볼륨과는 차별화된 현대적인 매트릭스를 도입하여 조직 및 기능적인 측면에서 통합적인 프로그램을 구성하게 한다. 벽면의 콘크리트 베이스와 샴페인 색상으로 코팅된 블록은 기존 학교 건물과 통일성 있는 분위기를 만들면서, 노출된 콘크리트가 독특한 분위기를 형성한다. 내부의 바닥재는 미끄럼 방지 기능이 탁월한 석재와 세라믹 타일을 사용하여 실내 체육관에서 개최하는 다양한 행사와 활동을 지원한다.
The Eça de Queirós Secondary School needed a space for indoor physical activities that could be used in all weather conditions. The architect carefully analyzed the fact that the school's buildings are historically significant structures that have endured for over half a century. To avoid disrupting the existing environment, the architect planned the design direction of the new gymnasium building within the context of mid-20th-century architectural forms. Unlike the existing buildings with uniform two-story cubic masses topped with sloping roofs, the new gymnasium introduces a modern matrix that differentiates it from traditional volumes, creating an integrated program in terms of organization and functionality. The concrete base of the walls and blocks coated in champagne color create a cohesive atmosphere with the existing school buildings, while the exposed concrete forms a unique ambiance. The interior flooring uses slip-resistant materials such as stone and ceramic tiles, providing safety for the various events and activities held in the indoor gymnasium.
