삼동면은 조선 시대 중앙 관청에 분청사기 등의 도자기를 납품하던 자기소가 있던 지역으로, 대상지는 7명의 뛰어난 도예가가 작업하고 있는 장소이다. 삼동면 왕방마을의 왕방요는 기존의 가마, 주택, 전시관에 더해 작은 카페 및 전시관을 신설하고자 하는 프로젝트였다. 故 신정희 선생은 300년 동안 맥이 끊겼던 서민 그릇인 조선 사발을 재현하고, ‘이도 다완’ 및 황색 찻잔을 만들어 일본에서 먼저 인정받았다. 맥이 끊어진 우리의 유약과 흙을 독학으로 연구하여 한국의 도맥을 발전시켰다. 도예가 신용균 선생은 故 신정희 선생의 차남으로, 현재까지 전통 작업 방식을 고수한다. 작업 대부분은 덤벙분청으로, 그 덤덤하고 소박한 자태는 자연과 하나 되어 살아온 우리의 삶과 마음을 닮았다.

 

작은 공간에 카페와 전시의 기능을 동시에 수용하기란 쉬운 작업이 아니었다. 건축가는 신용균 선생과의 대화 속에서 자연에서 와서 자연으로 돌아가는 도자기와 우리 삶의 공통점을 깨달았다. 이에 따라 실내에 도자기를 전시하던 방식을 과감히 버리고, 실내에서 차를 마시고 대자연에 도자기를 전시하는 파격적인 방법을 제안하였다.

 

우리나라 유약의 특징은 크랙 유약이다. 왕방요의 앞과 뒤는 큰 산으로 막혀 있다. 건축가는 이곳에 8개의 벽을 만들어, 마치 도자기에 크랙 유약을 입히듯 앞뒤의 산을 연결했다. 건축을 구성하는 최소의 선은 구조를 구성하는 벽이다. 그리고 무한히 확장된 벽의 세계는 내부와 외부를 하나로 연결하여, 오로지 차와 도자기에 집중하게 한다. 장인의 손에서 탄생하는 감성과 언뜻 투박해 보이는 콘크리트의 물성은 닮은 부분이 있다. 왕방요에서 건축과 도예는 차를 마시는 마음과 연결된다. 결국 빈 잔 속을 가득 채운 마음은 가득 찬 잔 속을 텅 비운 마음과 같다.

Samdong-myeon was an area known for its pottery production, supplying ceramics such as buncheong ware to the central government during the Joseon Dynasty. The target site is a place where seven outstanding potters are currently working. The Wangbangyo project in Wangbang village, Samdong-myeon, establishes a new cafe and exhibition space in addition to the existing kilns, houses, and exhibition hall. The late Master Shin Jeong-hee recreated the Joseon tea bowl, a commoner's vessel that had been out of production for 300 years, and gained recognition in Japan for creating “I-do Dawan” and yellow teacups. He independently researched our glazes and clay, which had been lost, and contributed to the development of Korean ceramics. Potter Shin Yong-kyun, a son of the late Master Shin Jeong-hee, continues to adhere to traditional working methods. Most of his work is done with the “deombung buncheong” technique (this technique involves submerging the completed structured work in a mixture of unfired clay and water before it dries, allowing the clay to be applied to the surface.), and its unassuming and rustic appearance reflects the life and spirit of our people, harmonizing with nature.

 

Fitting both the functions of a cafe and an exhibition space into a small area was not an easy task. In conversations with Potter Shin Yong-kyun, the architect realized the commonality between pottery, emerging from and returning to nature, and our daily lives. Consequently, they boldly discarded the conventional method of displaying pottery indoors and proposed a radical approach: drinking tea indoors while exhibiting pottery in the great outdoors.

 

The distinctive feature of Korean glaze is the crackle glaze. The front and back of the Wangbangyo have views of large mountains. The architect created eight walls here, connecting the front and back mountains like applying a crackle glaze to pottery. The minimal lines that compose the architecture are the walls that make up the structure. The world of infinitely expanding walls connects the interior and exterior, focusing solely on tea and pottery. The craftsmanship born from the artisan's hands shares a resemblance with the seemingly rugged nature of concrete. In Wangbangyo, architecture and ceramics are connected to the spirit of enjoying tea. Ultimately, the heart that fills an empty cup is akin to the heart that empties a full cup.
