계림 누(樓)는 광주 구도심을 관통하는 푸른길 산책로에 접한 작은 레스토랑이다. 푸른길 산책로는 광주 시민의 삶 속에 깊이 들어와 있는 작은 선(線)형 공원이다. 작은 규모의 건축물이지만 지나가는 시민들의 시선을 사로잡고, 그 호기심이 방문으로 이어지길 바랐다. 이와 동시에 푸른길 경관을 해치지 않고 조화롭게 공존하는 것이 중요했다.

 

건축가는 건축물과 푸른길의 경계를 희미하게 하여 자연환경과 상호 작용하도록 계획했다. 푸른길에서 느껴지는 계절의 변화, 눈앞에서 흔들리는 나뭇잎, 새가 지저귀는 소리 등 자연을 최대한 활용했다. 외피 재료인 골강판은 계절, 시간, 날씨에 따라 그 빛을 달리한다. 해가 낮은 시기에는 백색에 가깝게 변하며 푸른길을 밝히고, 여름이 되면 은은한 회색빛으로 푸른 나무 잎사귀를 돋보이게 한다.

 

대지는 지구단위계획구역에 속해 있어, 1층 가로 경관 후퇴가 필수였다. 또한 주차 공간을 만들 수 없어 연면적에 한계가 있었다. 법률적인 한계를 극복하기 위해 원통형의 유틸리티 공간과 영업장 사이에 빈 공간을 계획하여 최대한 공간을 활용했다. 또한 천장을 통해 1층까지 들어오는 빛은 실린더의 볼륨을 더욱 강조한다.

 

주변 경관과 계림 누(樓)를 조화롭게 하기 위해 외관 디자인에 새로운 접근 방식이 필요했다. 결론은 ‘파사드의 부재’이다. 건축물의 외피는 최소화하고, 대신 안에 있는 사람들의 모습과 공간을 밖으로 드러내 시선을 끌고자 했다. 내부를 직관적으로 드러내기 위해 주방, 계단, 화장실 등 유틸리티 시설을 원통형 구조물에 감추어 배경을 만들었다. 주황빛의 점토 타일로 만들어진 실린더는 큰 창을 통해 강한 존재감을 드러낸다. 식사하는 손님과 분주히 움직이는 직원의 모습이 건축물의 파사드가 되고, 여기에 산책하는 시민의 모습이 겹겹이 쌓이며 새로운 풍경으로 그려진다.

Gyerim Nu (樓) is a small restaurant located on the Pureungil promenade that traverses the downtown area of Gwangju. The Pureungil promenade is a small linear park deeply embedded in the lives of Gwangju citizens. Despite its small scale, the building captures the attention of passersby, and the owners hope that their curiosity will lead to a visit. At the same time, it was crucial to harmoniously coexist with the Pureungil landscape without compromising its beauty.

 

The architects planned to blur the boundaries between the building and the Pureungil, allowing for interaction with the natural environment. They maximized the contact with nature, incorporating the changing seasons felt on the Pureungil, the swaying leaves right before your eyes, and the sounds of birds. The appearance of the exterior material, galvanized steel panels, changes based on the season, time, and weather. During sunny periods, it leans towards a whitish hue, brightening the Blue Road, while in summer, it takes on a subtle grayish tone, accentuating the green leaves of the trees.

 

The site falls within a global planning zone, necessitating a setback of the horizontal landscape on the first floor. Additionally, due to the inability to create parking spaces, there were limitations on the floor area ratio. To overcome legal constraints, a void was planned between the cylindrical utility space and the commercial area to maximize the use of space. Moreover, the light entering through the ceiling emphasizes the volume of the cylinder, highlighting it all the way down to the first floor.

 

A new approach to the exterior design was necessary to harmonize with the surrounding landscape and Gyerim Nu (樓). The solution was the absence of a facade. The building's exterior was minimized, and instead, attention was drawn to the people and spaces inside by revealing them to the outside. To intuitively expose the interior, utility facilities such as the kitchen, stairs, and restrooms were concealed within a cylindrical structure to create a background. The cylinder, made of orange clay tiles, reveals a strong presence through large windows. The sight of diners and bustling staff becomes the facade of the building, layered with the images of citizens strolling, creating a new landscape.
