Mom’s Garden Center

다문리는 양평군 용문면에서 인구밀도가 가장 높은 동네다. ‘엄마의 정원’은 한가한 거리 풍경의 용문에 위치해있다. 건축주는 용문에서 나고 자라며 물려받은 땅에 근린생활을 짓고자 했다. 변두리에 자리잡은 근린생활시설은 어떤 모습이어야 할까. 건축가가 풀어야 하는 가장 큰 숙제였다. 인구밀도가 높아 건폐율과 용적률을 최대로 짓는 서울의 근린생활시설과는 달리, 지역에서 소비될 수 있을 정도의 공간과 규모를 결정해야 했다.

 

건축가는 엘리베이터를 이용하지 않더라도 사용 제한이 크지 않은 3층 규모로 계획했다. 3층은 2층과 복층으로 계획하였고 마당에서 이어지는 별도의 동선과 베란다 등을 설치해 부족한 접지성을 보완하였다.

 

서울 도심 길가에 늘어선 상가는 장소화되기 어렵지만, 건축주가 기억하는 옛 구멍가게의 앞 풍경을 상상해보면 동네 사람들이 애정하며 삼삼오오 모여 이야기와 술을 나누는 공간이었다. 이는 길과 상업시설이 만나는 접점에 마련된 작은 배려가 동네의 강력한 공공장소로서의 역할을 톡톡히 해낼 수 있다는 가능성을 의미한다. 건축가는 엄마의 정원에 주민들의 정원과 마당이 생기는 것을 상상하며 지역주민 간의 관계와 정체성을 강화하는 마실 터를 계획했다. 대지의 중심부에는 '엄마의 정원'이라 명명한 마당이 있고, 이 마당은 길과 맞닿아 마당을 둘러싼 상업공간과 자연스럽게 이어진다.

 

용문은 은퇴 후 여생을 보내기 위해 어린 아이들과 함께 유입되는 인구가 많은 지역이다. 아직은 텅 빈 공간이지만, 자녀들과 함께 방문한 사람들이 수다를 떨고 아이들은 간식을 입에 물고 어울려 노는 모습이 채워지는 장소가 되길 기대해본다.

Damun-ri is the most densely populated neighborhood in Yongmun-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun. Mom’s Garden Center is located in Yongmun, a quiet streetscape. The client, born and raised in Yongmun, wanted to build neighborhood facilities on the land he inherited. The biggest challenge for the architects was to come up with an ideal form of neighborhood facilities located on the outskirts. Unlike neighborhood facilities in Seoul, where the population density is high and the building-to-land ratio and floor area ratio are maximized, the architects had to determine a space and scale that could be consumed locally.

 

The architects planned a three-story building that would not be too restrictive in terms of use, even without an elevator. The third floor was planned as two floors and a duplex, and a separate circulation line leading from the yard and a veranda were installed to compensate for the lack of adjoining properties.

 

It is difficult for shops along a commercial street in Seoul to become a “place”, but when imagining  the front of an old corner store in the client’s memories, it was a place where neighbors would gather to share stories and drinks. This suggests the possibility that small considerations made at the intersection of the street and commercial facilities can play a significant role as a powerful public space in a neighborhood. The architects envisioned the residents’ gardens and yards forming in Mom’s Garden Center, and planned a relaxing gathering space that would strengthen the relationships among local residents and identity of the neighborhood. At the center of the site is a yard called ‘Mom’s Garden’, which faces the street and connects naturally to the commercial spaces surrounding it.

 

Yongmun is an area mostly inhabited by people with young children who come to spend their retirement years. Although it is an empty space at the moment, it will hopefully become a place filled with people who visit with their children and chat while children play and eat together.
