청두 자연사 박물관은 도시의 역사와 자연환경을 디자인에 담아 청두의 현대적인 에너지와 문화유산을 느낄 수 있는 곳이다. 쓰촨성 분지 서쪽의 청두 지역은 드넓고 비옥한 평야를 중심으로 활기찬 도심을 품고 있다. 도시의 경계에 자리 잡은 험난한 산맥은 고대 화산 활동으로 인한 지각 운동의 결과이다. 땅이 갈라지고 솟아오르는 듯한 역동적인 건축물의 형태는 청두의 지형을 모티브로 한다. 외벽 마감재로 쓰인 화강암에는 자연적인 형태의 타공을 적용하여 눈 내린 산에 햇빛이 반사되고, 밤이 되어 조명이 밝혀지면 밤하늘의 별처럼 반짝이는 느낌을 주도록 계획했다.
관람객을 반기는 넓은 캐노피의 주 출입구를 통해 건축물에 들어서면 중앙의 아트리움 공간을 만나게 된다. 아트리움을 가로지르는 브릿지는 목재로 마감하여 옛 청두의 물길에 놓인 다리를 표현했다. 화강석 마감의 솔리드한 매스를 균열처럼 가로지르는 유리창을 통해 주변의 도시와 조경을 조망할 수 있다. 박물관 외부 조경에는 고장에서 자라나는 식재와 수로를 계획했다. 건축물의 경계를 따라 이어진 미러 폰드 등의 수공간은 지역 유산인 쓰촨강과 둥펑 운하를 상징한다.
The Chengdu Museum of Natural History incorporates the city’s history and natural environment into its design, capturing the modern energy and cultural heritage of Chengdu. Located in the western part of the Sichuan Basin, Chengdu has a vibrant urban center centered on a vast, fertile plain. The rugged mountain ranges that border the city are the result of tectonic movements caused by ancient volcanic activity. The dynamic form of the building, which seems like splitting and rising ground, is inspired by the topography of Chengdu. The granite used as the finishing material for the exterior wall has naturally shaped perforations that reflect sunlight on the snowy mountains and twinkle like stars in the night sky when illuminated at night.
Visitors enter the building through a wide canopied main entrance that welcomes them into a central atrium space. The bridge across the atrium is clad in wood, representing the bridges that spanned the waterways of old Chengdu. Glass windows set in the crevices of the solid mass of the granite finish, offer views of the surrounding city and landscape. The museum’s exterior landscaping is composed of native plantings and waterways. Water spaces such as the Mirror Pond along the perimeter of the building symbolize the local heritage of the Sichuan River and Dongfeng Weir.
