The Small , Green Library

Most community centers in Seoul have a small library. Even if it is a small one, it is significant for the cultural well-being of residents to have a library where they can borrow or read books in the community center, which has close proximity to residents. However, many people are unaware of its existence, which leads to low usage rates. For this reason, it is necessary to actively promote these small libraries. In addition, the quality of space along with the quantity and quality of books will add continuity to the library usage rate. This project started with the question: what should these small libraries found in every neighborhood be like?

 

The existing small library in Suseo-dong was a place densely packed with books stacked on top of each other. It was a space where books were usually checked out. I believe that a neighborhood library should be a community space where people can read books, meet neighbors organically, and have conversations about books, rather than a quiet, focused space like a study hall. In addition to the existing purpose of book lending, we wanted it to be a space where people can enjoy books and meet people. It was a matter of changing the ownership of the space, from a space for books to a space for residents to enjoy books together. To this end, the corridor connecting the elevator to the workspace and the stairwell to the small library, which previously occupied a large area, was integrated with the small library to expand the library space. The library was planned as an open library without wall compartments or corridors. In order to accommodate the existing volume of books, we arranged the space in a way that allows visitors to interact with books and people in different ways; desks facing the window to sit alone, circular benches where people can sit in groups, and stepped benches for people to sit and read or select books. A pattern of oblique lines was designed on the floor to indicate the circulation of the former corridor. The wood and gray tones used overall create a calm and warm atmosphere, and the bench in the center is accented with a green color and lighting to serve as a central space. I hope for the public service space of the community center to be more than a place where you issue a certificate, and the library will not just be a place where you borrow books and leave, but a nearby space where residents who want to stay for a while can enjoy at least a minimum of cultural life.

서울시에 있는 대부분의 주민센터에는 작은 도서관이 있다. 주민들과의 거리가 가까운 주민센터에 비록 작지만 책을 빌리거나 읽을 수 있는 도서관이 있는 것은 문화적인 측면의 복지에 큰 의미가 있다. 그러나 그 존재를 모르는 이들이 많아 이용률이 떨어진다. 이를 위해 도서관을 알리는 적극적인 홍보가 필요하다. 또한, 도서의 양과 질과 더불어 공간의 질이 도서관 이용률에 지속성을 더할 것이다. 동네마다 있는 이 작은 도서관은 어떤 도서관이 되어야 할까라는 질문에서 프로젝트는 시작되었다.

 

기존의 수서동의 작은 도서관은 책이 겹겹이, 빽빽하게 꽂힌 책으로만 가득한 곳이었다. 도서대출이 주로 이루어지는 공간이었다. 동네 도서관은 독서실처럼 조용히 집중하는 공간이 아니라, 책을 읽고 이웃주민들을 자연스럽게 만나고, 책에 관한 대화를 나눌 수 있는 책을 매개로 한 동네 커뮤니티 공간이 되는 것이 바람직하다고 생각한다. 기존의 도서대출의 기능에 더해, 책을 즐길 수 있고, 사람을 만날 수 있는 공간으로 거듭나기를 바랬다. 책의 공간에서 책과 함께하는 주민의 공간으로 공간의 주인을 바꾸는 일이었다. 이를 위해 기존에 넓은 면적을 차지하던 엘리베이터에서 업무공간으로, 계단실에서 작은도서관으로 연결되는 복도를 작은도서관과 통합해 더 넓은 면적을 확보했다. 대신, 도서관은 벽의 구획이나 복도가 없는 열린 도서관 형태로 계획되었다. 기존의 책이 빽빽하게 꽂혀있던 도서의 양을 모두 수용할 수 있도록 하고, 이 책장 사이에 혼자 창을 바라보며 앉을 수 있는 테이블, 여럿이 둘러 앉을 수 있는 원형 벤치, 걸터앉아서 책을 보거나 고를 수 있는 계단식 벤치 등 다양한 형태의 책을, 그리고 사람을 대할 수 있는 방식의 공간을 배치했다. 기존 복도의 동선을 표시하기 위해 바닥에 사선의 패턴을 디자인했다. 전체적으로 우드톤와 그레이톤으로 차분하고 따뜻한 분위기에 중앙의 모여 앉을 수 있는 벤치는 그린컬러와 조명으로 포인트가 되어 중심공간으로서의 역할을 하도록 했다. 주민센터의 민원실이 증명서를 발급하고 바로 돌아서는 공간이고 도서관이 책을 대출해서 바로 나가는 공간이 아니길 바란다. 조금 더 머물고 싶은 주민들의 가장 가까운, 가장 최소한의 문화생활이 가능한 공간이 되길 바란다.
