This sequestered site around Miryang Dam used to be a jujube field, and it is a slope where one can sit back in an alley from the road and where it faces towards the mountain. The client is an artist Insuk Choi who works with cat-themed paintings and three-dimensional art, and commissioned his small workshop and a family art cafe which he can run together with his son. As a space created by a family of retired artists, it was an experimental project which transformed a small rural area into a complex cultural space.

Scattered Walls
Continuously looking into the work of artist Insuk Choi, we discovered the characteristic of creating an expression with lines on a large side. As the simplest architectural device reflective of the characteristics of his work as it is in the nature of the site, he attempted to create an expression connected with the surrounding landscape by creating walls scattered towards the same direction. The scattered walls are sometimes an element of the interior space and an element of the exterior space. Furthermore, a long linear, minimal roof flowing along the terrain is laid out in a “ㄷ”-shaped letter along the terrain to construct the interior space. In order to avoid creating boundaries between the interior and exterior spaces around the roof, all of them are finished with glass to create an open space towards the nature. This is intended to create an atmosphere which lies in between the scattered walls of nature.

Structure Built in Layers
The layers of the space were formed in a direction perpendicular to the scattered walls. The commercial space is conventionally placed in the front and the work studio is placed in the back, whereas the work studio is placed in the front and finished with transparent glass to ensure that this space can always be recognized from the road and the commercial space inside. While it is a small work space, it becomes the invisible center of the building as if it were the stage of a theater. The Butterfly Workshop is consisted of the layers which lead to the entry and work studio, the water space which is the outer space, the inner space where you drink coffee, and the outer space. The continuity of the overlapping spaces can be visually confirmed across all spaces, and based on which, there are no boundaries of layer, but rather it causes the illusion of being in the middle world opened as one by the scattered physical walls.

Point of Connection
Entry is naturally made into the building while looking at the water space visible through the gap between the wall and the roof space with glass. The studio and the store create a point of connection through the water space. The narrow interior space passes through the barista area, bypasses the service line of movement, and enters deep inside. The interior and the exterior use the same slope toward creating a difference in height, and when they arrive at the upper level position, they go outside again. In the external space of the high tier, one would encounter a point which naturally leads to a half-a-story high roof and naturally traverse the roof. Walking through such a cycle, a visitor finds the point where each movement and space are connected.

밀양댐 주변의 한적한 대지인 이곳은 대추밭으로 사용되고 있던 곳으로, 도로에서 골목으로 들어가 뒤로 눌러 앉아 있고 산과 만나는 경사지이다. 건축주는 고양이를 주제로 그림 및 입체 아트 작업을 하는 예술가 최인석으로 그의 조그마한 작업 공방과 아들이 함께 운영할 수 있는 가족 아트카페를 의뢰하였다. 은퇴한 예술가 가족이 함께 만들어내는 공간으로, 시골의 작은 지역을 복합문화공간으로 만들어내는 실험 프로젝트였다.

흩뿌려진 벽
예술가 최인석의 작업을 계속해서 들여다보니 하나의 커다란 면에서 선으로 표정을 만들어내는 특징을 발견할 수 있었다. 그의 작업 특징을 대상지의 자연에 그대로 반영하는 가장 단순한 건축 장치로 동일한 방향의 흩뿌려진 벽들을 만들어 주변 풍경과 이어진 표정을 만들고자 하였다. 흩뿌려진 벽들은 때로는 내부 공간의 요소가 되고 때로는 외부 공간의 요소가 되기도 한다. 그리고 지형을 따라 흐르는 긴 선형의 최소 지붕이 지형을 따라 ㄷ자 배치로 놓이며 내부 공간을 구축한다. 지붕을 둘러싸고 내·외부 공간의 경계를 만들지 않기 위하여 모두 유리로 마감하여 자연에 열린 공간을 구축하였다. 이는 자연의 흩뿌려진 벽들 사이에 놓여 있는 분위기를 연출하기 위함이다.

레이어로 구축된 구성
흩뿌려진 벽과 직교되는 방향으로 공간의 레이어를 구성하였다. 보통은 상업공간이 전면에 배치되고 작업 공방이 안쪽에 배치되는 것과 반대로 작업 공방을 전면에 배치하고 투명한 유리로 마감하여 도로와 안쪽 상업공간에서 항상 이 공간을 인지할 수 있도록 하였다. 작은 작업공간이지만 극장의 무대인 것처럼 본 건축물의 보이지 않는 중심이 되는 것이다. 나비공작소는 진입 및 작업 공방, 외부 공간인 수공간, 커피를 마시는 내부 공간, 그리고 그 다음은 외부 공간으로 이어지는 레이어로 구성되어 있다. 모든 공간에서 겹겹이 중첩되는 공간들의 연속성을 시각적으로 확인할 수 있고 이를 통하여 레이어의 경계가 생기지 않고 오히려 흩뿌려진 물리적인 벽들에 의해 하나로 열린 중간계에 있는 듯한 착각을 불러일으킨다.

연결의 지점
진입은 벽과 유리가 있는 지붕 공간의 벌어진 사이로 보이는 수공간을 보면서 건축물 내부로 자연스럽게 들어오게 된다. 작업실과 매장은 수공간을 통하여 연결의 지점을 만들고 있다. 폭이 좁은 내부 공간은 바리스타 영역을 지나고 서비스 동선을 우회하며 깊은 내부로 진입한다. 내부와 외부는 같은 경사를 이용하여 높이차를 만들고 높은 상단부에 도착하면 다시 외부로 나가게 된다. 높은 단의 외부 공간에서 자연스럽게 반층 높은 지붕으로 연결되는 지점을 만나고 자연스럽게 지붕을 순회하게 된다. 이 순환의 과정을 돌면서 방문객은 각각의 동선과 공간이 연결된 지점들을 확인하게 된다.
