Designed by MVRDV, the 29m high platform makes the roof of the museum accessible via a 143-step external staircase. Painted a striking pink to increase visibility, MVRDV’s design creates a 600m2 creative temporary meeting place that will form the heart of the Rotterdam Architecture Month throughout June. In July and August, The Podium will become the place to be for a jazz concert or yoga class with a view of the city. Various activities will also take place for the children of Rotterdam, including a summer camp.
The commission to design a temporary installation arose from a desire to draw further attention to MVRDVHNI: The Living Archive of a Studio, an exhibition of MVRDV’s work currently on show in the top floor of HNI. Due to work being conducted on the public space outside the museum, the main entrance of Het Nieuwe Instituut is currently less visible and accessible, so the MVRDV design team came up with the idea to create an alternative access route via a large outdoor staircase.
The designers were inspired by the panoramic view from the roof of Het Nieuwe Instituut, and by the building’s design by Jo Coenen, with its characteristic pergola. In order to produce The Podium as sustainably as possible, scaffolding material and recyclable floor finishes were chosen as materials. The Podium is accessible via the outside staircase and via the exhibition in the floor below. For visitors who cannot use the stairs, The Podium is accessible by elevator or via the internal access of Het Nieuwe Instituut.
In the month of June, the Podium forms the heart of Rotterdam Architecture Month. Thanks to the view over various iconic buildings in Rotterdam, including the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen designed by MVRDV, The Podium displays the qualities of Rotterdam as an architectural city. In July and August, various partners will organise activities at The Podium, including Motel Mozaique, the NN North Sea Jazz Festival, Operator, Roffa Mon Amour, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
Last week, on Ascension Day, saw the opening of that other high-level installation, the Rotterdam Rooftop Walk, opened. For a small fee, visitors can stroll on an orange carpet over various roofs, with the highlight of the walk being a bridge spanning the Coolsingel. The Rooftop Walk is an initiative of the Rotterdamse Dakendagen and was designed in collaboration with MVRDV. The installation will be on display until June 24 and was already sold out this weekend. The extensive programming on the carpet should make visitors more aware of what is possible on roofs: from a platform for drones that deliver parcels, thus reducing traffic jams, to rooftop gardens and various solutions for water storage, to a small village.
멀리서도 눈에 띄는 진하고 강한 분홍색의 설치물. 29m 높이의 이 플랫폼은 지상에서 143개의 외부 계단을 통해 로테르담건축박물관 지붕까지 한 번에 접근할 수 있도록 임시로 조성된 공간이다. 로테르담은 2016년부터 매년 6월에 건축의 달(Rotterdam Architecture Month) 행사를 진행해오고 있다. ‘더 포디움’은 올해 행사 동안 사용된 핵심 공간이다.
‘더 포디움’은 로테르담건축박물관(Het Nieuwe Instituut)이 설계 당시 박물관 최상층에서 전시 중인 MVRDV의 작품전 ‘스튜디오의 살아있는 아카이브(MVRDVHNI: Living Archive of a Studio)’에 어떻게하면 더 많은 사람이 방문할 수 있을지 고민하던 것에서 시작됐다. 박물관 주변은 다양한 공공공간들이 있어, 박물관의 정문이 눈에 띄지 않는 상황이었다. 따라서 디자인팀은 대형 야외 계단을 통해 대체 접근 경로를 임시로 설치하는 것을 제안했다.
조 코이넨(Jo Coenen)이 설계한 로테르담건축박물관은 지붕에서 로테르담의 시내를 탁 트인 전망으로 바라볼 수 있으며, 이 위에는 독특한 설치형 지붕 시설(퍼걸러)이 있다. MVRDV는 바로 이 부분에서 더 포디움에 대한 영감을 받았다. 그들은 임시로 설치되는 길이지만 지속가능함을 위하여 공사에 사용되는 기본적인 비계 자재와 재활용할 수 있는 바닥 마감재를 선택했다. 더 포디움을 통해 외부 계단과 아래 층의 전시도 접근할 수 있으며, 더 포디움의 계단을 이용할 수 없는 방문객은 엘리베이터를 타고 상층부로 이동하여 플랫폼에 오르거나, 박물관 내부 경로를 통해서도 접근할 수 있다.
더불어, 로테르담 도심 위를 걷는 주황색의 설치 보행로(Rotterdam Rooftop Walk)도 함께 문을 열었다. ‘더 포디움’은 건축의 달 행사가 끝난 7월과 8월에는 재즈 콘서트나 요가 수업, 또는 여름캠프 등 로테르담 어린이들을 위한 다양한 활동도 진행됐다.
