MOTHER BKK 'Prosperous Eats'

Inspired by ‘Mother Earth’ the goddess of origin, life-giving and nurturing of nature, the designer gave the life to Mother - the newly opened restaurant using earth elements such as soil, stones, minerals, and organic matters that transformed through time.

Originated in the small two stories high building in Taladnoi, the historic neighborhood of Bangkok, Mother welcomes us into the prosperous gastronomic journey through its humbly warmth earth toned wooden stamped concrete facade and a wooden frame entrance.

As we step inside, the use of natural wooden floor, the off white wooden stamped concrete wall and the special designed transparent roof altogether formed the light and lively airy space that we can suddenly feel comfortable and refreshing. The designer reconstructed the space inside and played with the ceiling boards that are randomly opened to bring in sunlight and create a constant play of shadows, making us feel like we as if we are sitting under the tree.

Whereas the heart of ‘Mother’ is the prosperity of the food, the open kitchen was designed and placed right in the middle of the first floor so that we can have a closer and deeper connection to the origin of every dish through direct interaction with the chef.

Passing through the open kitchen, black and darker lighting are used to lead our attention up the staircase to the 2nd floor. While the atmosphere between each floor connected through the airy space, the designed created a much subtle yet mystery vibe to the 2nd floor in which functioned as a bar with the darker tone furniture. Behind the counter bar, we can see the art piece of ‘Four Elements’ emphasis the origin of earth, indirectly telling the story behind ‘Mother’.

On this 2nd floor, we will be able to see the living art through big frame of window on the façade featuring a big tree that have been on the street of Taladnoi for many decades. This scene has become the symbolic of the restaurant that the designer created to express the sense of co-existence of ‘Mother’ in rich environment of history and nature neighborhood.

자연의 기원과 생명, 그리고 양육의 여신인 '대지'에서 영감을 받아, 디자이너는 시간이 지남에 따라 변하는 흙, 돌, 광물, 유기물과 같은 요소를 사용하여 태국 방콕의 차이나타운으로 불리는 삼판타웡에 새롭게 문을 연 레스토랑 MOTHER BKK를 디자인했다.

방콕의 역사적인 지역인 탈랏 노이(Talat Noi)의 작은 2층 높이 건물에서 시작된 MOTHER BKK는 따뜻한 흙 톤의 나무 도장 콘크리트의 외관과 와 나무프레임 입구를 통해 우리를 미식 여행으로 초대한다.

내부로 들어서면 천연 원목 바닥과 회백색의 원목 도장 콘크리트 벽, 특별히 디자인된 투명 지붕이 한데 어우러져 가볍고 생동감 넘치는 공간을 형성해 편안하고 상쾌함을 느낄 수 있다. 디자이너에 의해 재구성된 공간은 무작위로 열린 천장 보드로 들어오는 햇빛과 그로인해 생긴 그림자로 마치 나무 밑에 앉아 있는 듯한 느낌을 준다.

'MOTHER BKK'의 핵심이 음식의 풍요로움이라면, 오픈 키친은 1층 중앙에 바로 배치하여 셰프와의 직접적인 교류를 통해 모든 요리의 기원과 직접적인 상호작용을 통해 더욱 깊은 소통을 할 수 있도록 디자인됐다.

오픈 키친을 지나면 검은색과 어두운 조명이 2층으로 올라가는 계단으로 시선을 이끈다. 각 층의 분위기가 통풍이 잘되는 공간으로 연결된 가운데, 어두운 톤의 가구로 바 역할을 하는 2층에 훨씬 은은하면서도 신비로운 분위기를 자아낸다. 카운터 바 뒤에는 대지의 기원을 강조하는 '4대 요소(물, 불, 흙, 바람)'의 예술 작품이 있어 'MOTHER BKK' 뒤에 숨겨진 이야기를 간접적으로 들려준다.

2층에서는 수십 년 동안 탈랏 노이 거리에 있었던 큰 나무가 있는 정면의 큰 창틀을 통해 살아있는 예술 작품을 볼 수 있다. 이 장면은 풍부한 역사와 자연이 공존하는 동네에서 디자이너가 'MOTHER BKK'의 공존의식을 표현하기 위해 만든 레스토랑의 상징이 됐다.
