Hôpital Vétérinaire du Parc squeezes a state of the art veterinarian hospital within 2 floors of a small abandoned photo studio. Redefining the veterinary experience for the Mile End neighbourhood, the storefront space and dark basement are brought to life with a calming minimal palette juxtaposed against raw existing surfaces and generous glazed partitions. Utilitarian materials work within the neighbourhood and the specific needs of a veterinary clinic. Stone foundations, concrete wainscoting and ceramic tiling protect the lower part of the walls required to be resistant to animal wear and tear, whereas milky polycarbonate ceiling panels hide a complex mechanical system revealing only modest graphic lighting. Technical spaces are efficiently organized around a central circulation spine, allowing for a spacious reception where animals and owners alike can circulate freely. Friendly custom furniture in Corian and orchestrated glimpses seek to ease anxiety and subvert traditional doctor/client/patient formality.
Integral to the design is a central courtyard that funnels natural light into the center of the structure and provides efficient access and ventilation for all of the residential units. The upper units occupy two floors. The front unit, belonging to the veterinarian, gives onto a large hidden rooftop terrace overlooking Montreal’s Mount Royal.
On the exterior, the building is restrained and monochromatic. The façade is clad in a single material, a grid of local limestone quarried 50 km away. A tripartite stacking plays on the city’s layered façades, delineating the residential units through tiered setbacks over a generous glass storefront. Subtle aluminum details surround windows and doors, and finely perforated guardrails fade into the monochromatic background. Fully glazed balconies are punched into the façade giving tenants added privacy while streamlining the building’s form.
이 프로젝트는 사진스튜디오였던 2층 규모의 공간을 2개의 주거공간 유닛과 옥상을 추가하여 동물병원과 주택으로 확장한 프로젝트다. 기존의 외관, 유리 파티션과 병치된 최소한의 색상으로 매장 앞 공간과 어두운 지하실에 생기를 불어넣어 Mile End 지역의 수의학적 경험을 재정의한다. 석재 기초, 콘크리트 웨인스코팅 및 세라믹 타일링은 마모에 강해야 하는 벽의 하부를 보호하고, 유백색의 폴리카보네이트 천장 패널은 복잡한 기계 시스템을 숨기고 그래픽 조명만을 드러낸다. 기술 공간은 중앙 순환을 중심으로 효율적으로 구성되어 동물과 보호자 모두가 자유롭게 순환할 수 있는 넓은 리셉션공간을 만들어 낸다. Corian의 맞춤형 가구를 통해 불안을 완화하고 전통적인 의사 / 고객 / 환자 관계의 형식을 전복시킨다.
디자인의 핵심은 자연 채광을 중앙으로 끌어들이고 모든 주거 단위에 효율적인 접근과 환기를 제공하는 중앙의 안뜰이다. 상층부는 두개층을 차지하고 있으며, 동물병원이 있는 전면 유닛은 몬트리올의 마운트 로열이 내려다보이는 옥상 테라스로 연결된다.
건물의 외관은 절제된 단색이다. 파사드는 50km 떨어진 곳에서 채석된 지역 석회석으로 단일 재료를 사용했다. 여러 층으로 겹겹이 쌓인 파사드는 세 부분으로 층이 형성된다. 알루미늄 디테일이 창문과 문을 둘러싸고 있다. 전면 유리로 된 발코니는 건물의 형태를 간소화시켜준다. 또한, 세입자의 프라이버시를 위해 구멍이 미세하게 뚫린 난간을 설치했다.
