The LocHal, an old locomotive hall dating from 1932, is located next to the station of Tilburg and houses the Bibliotheek Midden-Brabant, Kunstloc Brabant, Brabant C and Seats2Meet. Everyone is welcome in the new living room of Tilburg, a world-class space for both young and old to read, learn and study, meet and gather. It is a place for testing, creating, exhibiting and presenting the latest innovations. Tilburg is not only known for its worksites of the Dutch National Railways, but also for its textile industry and the Efteling, the nearby popular fairytale theme park. Characteristic historical elements form an exciting combination with new oak and steel additions, and a warm colour palette of reds and oranges. The interior is varied, playful and innovative. There is a diversity of atmospheres for meeting, collaboration, and concentrated work.
The eye-catcher is the city café featuring a bar with red, brown and gold ceramic tiles and a neon LocHal logo on top. It can easily be spotted from passing trains. The old tracks are visible in the concrete floor. They are used to move three large wheeled “train” tables. For example, a single table can become the extension of the bar; when placed together, the tables form a stage or catwalk with the stairs as a tribune. They can even be moved outside along the tracks to form a stage for events on the square. Next to this city café is the reading room with magazines, and next to that is the Kunstloc exhibition space. It is right in the corner, clearly visible from the outside. The textile walls designed by Inside Outside, inspired by Tilburg as a textile city, create intimate spaces in this large hall. When these hanging textiles are drawn together, the space can accommodate large-scale events. The stair landscape that Civic designed for the monumental LocHal takes you to the upper floors. Parts of the stairs are made of oak. With the flexible wooden seating elements, everyone can design their own space. For instance, you can ‘build’ a meeting place or a quiet place to work undisturbed. The LocHal is not only a library, but also a laboratory where you are challenged, gain new knowledge and learn about new innovations. These specially designed labs can be found throughout the building. The Library, Kunstloc and Brabant C share the office area, which offers a wide range of workplaces. There are open office spaces, ‘touchdown’ places for short tasks, places for collaboration, meeting places and a coffee corner. A wall of oak bookcases separates the office area from the interior street. Lockers are interspersed with transparent display cases, forming a playful composition.
옛 기차역의 낡은 철골들로 만들어진 거대 복합문화공간, 로칼 도서관
1932년에 지어졌던 옛 기차역을 개조하여 지역의 복합문화공간이 들어섰다. 틸부르흐 역 옆에 조성된 로칼 도서관은 세계적 수준의 도서관이다. 새롭게 시민들과 만나는 생활밀착형 문화공간은 독서, 교육 및 학습, 만남과 모임을 위해 남녀노소 누구에게나 열려있다.
네온사인 로고가 설치된 바가 있는 도시 카페는 사람들의 눈길을 사로잡으며 지나가는 기차에서도 쉽게 보인다. 콘크리트 바닥에는 오래된 선로가 드러나 있는데, 큰 바퀴가 달린 세 개의 “기차” 테이블을 이동하는 데 사용된다. 예를 들어, 단일 테이블이 함께 배치되면 계단을 연단으로 이용한 무대 또는 캣워크를 형성하여 바가 확장되기도 한다. 또, 테이블은 선로를 따라 야외로 이동하여 광장에서 열리는 이벤트를 위한 무대를 형성할 수도 있다. 카페 옆에는 열람실이 있고, 그 옆 모퉁이에는 전시 공간이 자리하고 있다. 인사이드 아웃사이드(Inside Outside)가 디자인한 직물 벽은 직물 도시인 틸부르흐에서 영감을 받아 넓은 홀에 친밀한 공간을 조성한다. 천장부터 늘어진 직물을 걷으면, 대규모 이벤트를 수용할 수 있는 공간이 된다. 건물 안쪽에는 오래된 페인트 층이 남아있는 역사적인 산업화 시대의 기둥이 늘어선 내부 거리가 있다.
색연필과 자의 모양의 책장을 가진 어린이 도서관은 거대한 동화책 사이를 걸으며 책을 찾아보거나 놀이를 할 수 있는 공간이다. 아이들은 휴대폰 모양의 테이블에서 책을 읽거나 열린 책 위에 누워서 이야기를 들을 수 있다. 청소년 공간은 집중이 필요한 작업, 협업 및 회의 등 다양한 학습 환경을 위한 공간을 제공하기 위해 다채로운 좌석과 테이블로 디자인됐다. 방문자는 씨빅 아키텍츠(Civic Architecs)가 기념비적인 건물을 위해 디자인한 계단 조경을 통해 위층으로 올라갈 수 있다. 계단의 일부는 참나무를 사용하여 만들었다. 유기적인 목재 좌석을 재료로 누구나 자신만의 공간을 디자인할 수 있다. 로칼 도서관은 도서관일 뿐만 아니라 새로운 지식을 얻고 새로운 혁신에 대해 배우는 실험실이다. 도서관은 다양한 작업 공간을 제공하는 업무공간도 마련되어 있다. 열린 사무실 공간과 간단한 작업을 위한 공간, 협업 공간, 회의 공간 및 커피 코너가 있다. 참나무로 된 책장 벽은 사무실 공간과 내부 거리를 구분 짓는다. 업무공간은 집중 작업과 외부 전망을 위한 중이층으로 만들어져, 시민들에게 다채로움을 제공한다. 엇갈린 층의 계단은 사무 공간 역할을 하며 저층의 작업 통로로 이어진다. 계단은 직원을 대상으로 한 강의 및 프레젠테이션을 위한 좌석 또는 낮은 무대로도 사용된다.
