Piece Hostel Sanjo is a resting space situated in downtown Kyoto. At the parking lot space, the disassembled underground building of the existing hotel remained. The framework of this existing basement was used as a retaining wall, and this is to utilize the obtainable underground space as much as possible by removing underground constructions, which are troublesome in narrow sites of a main street. Kyoto’s unique hidden green spaces of various scales surrounded by fences are considered 'buried green spaces'. Here, the green spaces, which act like courtyards, were installed on the wall for the basement and on the terrace for the rooftop, and spaces that do not feel like a basement or rooftop are obtained with a method of 'putting nature into the city'. In order to unify the spaces underground and aboveground, steel pillars were placed from the basement and the volume of the rooms was raised to the 15m height regulation limit.

With the two-story high ventilation space under the volume as the lobby, the approaching slope or indoor staircase and the outdoor staircase installed to the sunken garden provide a circularity that allows the hostel to be seen from the street. Through the wall greening buried in the sunken garden, the rich and open lobby in the void provides a moistness even from underground as well as an attractancy through the front road. In order to minimize the affluent volume, the rooms were arranged in repeated shapes for maximum efficiency. The rooftop terrace was installed on top of the volume and the sky was emphasizes with the buried green space surrounded by walls to seek the portrayal as a special location. The rich black volume erased its existence at night. An architectural method where the ventilation space itself that is full of light, along with the wall greening that considered the curtain wall with minimal expression, the environment of the underground space and the attraction of attention, becomes the facade was proposed.

피스호스텔 산죠

피스호스텔은 교토 시내 번화가에 있는데, 주차장에는 기존에 해체된 호텔의 지하 골조가 그대로 남아 있었다. 프로젝트를 진행하는 당시, 기존의 지하 골조를 흙막이로 사용하여 번화가의 좁은 대지에서 시공하기 어려운 지하 공사를 없애고, 지하 공간을 최대한 활용하는 것을 목표로 진행했다. 또한, 다양한 규모의 녹지가 담장으로 둘러싸여 숨어 있는 교토 특유의 모습을 “매장 녹지”로 보고, 중정과 같은 녹지를 지하는 벽면에, 옥상은 테라스에 설치하여 도시에 녹지를 매장하는 방법으로 지하나 옥상에 있는 느낌이 들지 않는 공간을 계획하고자 했다. 지하와 지상의 공간을 일체화하기 위해 지하에서부터 철골 기둥을 세우고 객실 볼륨을 15m 높이 규제의 한계까지 높였다.

객실 아래 2개 층에 보이드 공간이 있는 로비로 하여 진입 경사로와 실내 계단을 두었다. 선큰 가든에는 옥외계단을 삽입하여 거리에서도 보이는 회유성 있는 공간을 만들었다. 보이드 공간에 떠 있는 개방적인 로비는 선큰 가든에 매장한 벽면 녹화에 의해 지하지만 안정감과 전면 도로에서의 주목성을 준다. 공중에 떠 있는 볼륨을 최소화하기 위해 중복도에 효율적인 공간의 객실을 배치했다. 볼륨 위에는 옥상 테라스를 설치하고 벽으로 둘러싼 매장 녹지로 하늘을 강조하여 특별한 장소를 연출했다. 공중에 떠 있는 검은색의 볼륨은 밤에는 그 존재가 없어진다. 최소한의 커튼월, 지하 공간의 환경과 주목성을 고려한 벽면녹화와 어우러져 빛으로 가득 찬 보이드 공간 자체가 파사드가 되는 건축을 제안했다.
