Nestled between Hangzhou and the calm shores of East Lake, the Hangzhou Yuhang Opera cuts a distinctive profile in the skyline, its landscaped peaks appearing to dip beneath the water’s glassy surface. The new building forms the heart of a new cultural node in Yuhang, a fast-growing district in the metropolis of Hangzhou.

Crucial to the design was East Lake, an expanse of water that lies at the heart of the surrounding park and forms the shimmering, reflective backdrop for the new theater. A meandering promenade circles the lake, passing through small pocket parks (including a traditional Chinese water garden) and commercial facilities. The exterior edge of the park borders a high-speed rail station that has been instrumental in Yuhang’s recent growth and will welcome even more visitors to the new cultural destination.

The theater dominates the lake and the surroundings with a publicly accessible sloping landscape reminiscent in form and scale to ancient manmade landforms that have been discovered in the region. “People in this region are proud of the 3,000 year old mysterious gigantic sloping landforms their ancestors built while laying the foundations of the Chinese civilization. We were inspired by them to use the roofs of the Opera to re-create similarly elevated vantage points above the surrounding lake and landscape.”

The two sloped and intersecting masses of the Opera perch above an elevated public plaza, the roofs touching lightly on the ground level to invite visitors to climb up and enjoy the view. Both structures are clad in a graphic façade pattern that references ice cracking on the frozen lake; moving from solid back-of-house coverage to near total transparency where it encloses the public foyers – floes of ice drifting away to reveal the bright interior. The different entrances to the building connect in a path around the auditorium that offers views to the lake and foyer interior. Interior balconies and staircases maximize views out across the site and within the foyer: going to the opera is about seeing and being seen.

The building comprises two main performance/event spaces: the Main Hall, which can seat up to 1,400, and the 500-seat Black Box theater. The ability of the halls to host a variety of events was a core focus in the design, driving the ambitious acoustic and stage design inside the halls. The Black Box theater has the ability to literally open one full side to the elevated public plaza, becoming a stage for a massive 10,000 people exterior venue.

호수의 얼음 조각을 닮은 오페라극장, 항주 여항 대극장

항주에서도 동쪽에 위치한 여항(위항구)의 호수를 배경으로 지닌 오페라하우스가 들어섰다. 여항 호수 강변에 고고하게 위치한 여항 대극장은 독특한 파사드를 가지고 있다. 마치 호수의 얼음 조각이 새겨진 듯한 새로운 극작은 빠르게 성장하는 구역, 여항의 새로운 문화적 중심지다.

극장은 주변 공원의 중심부의 넓게 트인 지역에 위치하며, 주변으로 자유롭게 거닐 수 있는 산책로가 호수를 동그랗게 감싼다. 이 공원 곳곳에는 크고 작은 중국의 전통 수공간을 가진 소형공원들과 상업 시설들이 자리 잡고 있다. 또한, 최근 여항의 성장에 중요한 역할을 하고 있는 고속철도역과도 연결된다.

대극장은 호수와 이 지역에서 발견된 고대 인류가 만든 대지 형태와 규모를 연상시키며 대중적으로 접근 가능한 경사진 전경을 가진 주변환경을 군림한다. “이 지역의 사람들은 중국 민주화의 기초를 쌓는 동안 그들의 조상들이 건설한 3천 년 된 거대하고 경사진 대지 형태를 자랑스러워한다. 우리는 그들에게 영감을 얻어 주변의 호수와 전경 위로 비슷하게 상승된 전망 포인트를 재창조하기 위해 대극장의 지붕을 사용했다.”

대극장의 두 개의 경사지와 교차하는 매스들은 상승 되어있는 공공 광장의 상단에 위치한다. 지붕들은 방문객들이 올라가서 전경을 즐길 수 있게 지상층과 연결되어 있다. 두 구조들 모두 언 호수에 생긴 얼음 조각을 닮은 파사드 패턴으로 덮여있다. 솔리드한 대극장 뒤편에서 이동하여 공공 현관을 봉쇄하는 부분은 거의 완전 투명한 상태로 변화한다. 얼음 덩어리들은 밝은 내부를 드러내기 위해 멀어져 간다. 건물로의 여러 입구들은 호수로의 전경과 현관 인테리어의 전경을 제공하는 강당 주위 경로들과 연결된다. 내부 발코니들과 계단은 대지를 가로지르는 전경과 현관 내부의 전경을 극대화 한다.

대극장 건물은 두 개의 주요 공연/이벤트 공간들이 들어차 있다. 1,400명이 앉을 수 있는 메인 홀과 500개의 좌석을 갖춘 블랙 박스 극장, 다양한 이벤트들을 주최할 수 있는 홀은 뛰어난 음향기술, 아름다운 무대 공간이 있다. 블랙박스 극장은 말 그대로 한 면 전체를 상승된 공공 광장에 개방 시키는 능력을 갖고 있으며, 10,000명이라는 거대한 관중을 위한 외부 무대도 마련된 대형 극장이다.
