TPFL: THREE PLANES FIVE LAYERS

In South Korea, the forms of small-scale buildings are often determined by construction laws. This intense red building that has entered Incheon’s Ganseok-dong, where residential areas of the 70s and 90s are concentrated, was created with three planes and five layers. While valuing the overall context of the city, the architect designed an architecture that used the building law to its own advantage in the small land.

TPFL has three intense red planes on its facade. The three planes are the elevation that surrounds the building as well as the element that forms the shape of the building. The corners where the three planes do not meet are embodied as the main entrance or openings of the building. At the exterior staircase that leads to the second floor of the building, a naturally open space is formed with the two separated planes. Furthermore, the three planes that are used in this way not only act as elements that form the shape, but also as structural elements of the building. Since TPFL is formed with a walls structure rather than the general Rahmen structure, these three planes are the main structures as well as masses of the building. The interior is divided into a neighborhood living facility on the first and second floors, and a housing on the third and fourth floors. In particular, the diagonal wall on the fourth floor is an element that brings variety to the space that can seem monotonous. The diagonal mass of the fourth floor creates five layers with the reversed beam and the pillars that support it, and these layers are formed to have various senses of space within the architecture.

The fact that the designer paid careful attention during the construction process of TPFL in order to embody these intentions of the architect is also what makes this project special. The designer participated in detailed construction elements such as patterns or railings that constructors or supervisors may have missed or have difficulty identifying, and perfected the architecture.

세 개의 면, 다섯 개의 켜로 만들어진 주택

한국의 소규모 건축물들은 건축법에 의해서 그 형태가 결정되는 경우가 많다. 70-90년대에 지어진 주택가들이 밀집된 인천 간석동에 들어선 이 강렬한 붉은색의 건물은 세 개의 면과 다섯 개의 켜로 만들어졌다. 건축가는 도시의 전체 맥락을 중시하면서도, 작은 땅 안에서 건축법을 역이용한 건축물을 설계했다.

TPFL은 입면에 강렬한 세 개의 붉은 벽면을 가지고 있다. 세 개의 면은 건축물을 둘러싸고 있는 입면이자, 건물의 형태를 만드는 요소다. 세 개의 면이 이어지지 않는 모서리 부분은 건축물의 주출입구 또는 개구부로 나타난다. 건축물의 2층으로 향하는 외부계단에도 떨어진 두 개의 면이 자연스럽게 열려있는 공간을 형성한다. 그리고 이렇게 사용된 세 개의 면은 형태를 만드는 요소 뿐만 아니라 건축물의 구조적 요소도 함께 한다. TPFL은 일반적인 라멘구조의 형식이 아닌, 벽체구조로 구성되어 있기 때문에, 이 세 개의 면은 건축물의 주요 구조이자 매스인 것이다. 내부는 1, 2층의 근생과 3, 4층의 주택으로 구분된다. 특히 4층의 사선의 벽은 단조로울 수 있는 공간에 변화를 주는 요소다. 4층의 사선 매스는 역보와 이를 지탱하는 기둥으로 다섯 개의 켜를 만들며, 이러한 켜들은 건축물 안에서 다양한 공간감을 가지도록 구성되어 있다.

이러한 건축가의 의도를 최대한 구현하기 위하여, TPFL의 시공과정 안에 설계자가 세심하게 신경썼다는 점도 이 프로젝트의 특별한 점이다. 시공사나 감리자가 놓치거나 파악하기 힘든 패턴이나 난간, 디테일한 시공 요소까지 설계자가 참여하여 건축물의 전체적인 완성도를 높였다.
