Yiwu Foreign Languages School is located in the main urban area of Yiwu, Zhejiang Province,with 48 classes of elementary schools and 24 classes of junior high schools. As the first project of returned overseas Chinese, it’s also one of the typical practices of teaching space design issues Comfort scale in high density urban.

The design is aimed to create a joyful campus to bring back a sense of intimacy and inspire children’s curiosity, rather than a uniform and solemn general school. Starting with a child’s perspective, the design introduces the “Moving”, “Communal” and “Social” teaching environment to stimulate children’s desire for study and creativity. It’s also a comfortable campus integrated with the international outlook and Yiwu-rooted culture.

The site is a rectangle rotated at 45-degree angle. Compared with other normal school of similar scale, the site space is very limited. Solving this “Problem of the layout of the plan” while meeting the scale of the campus’s intimate comfort has become the core issue. Each teaching units and spatial module are derived from analyzing about function and volume. Then, the teaching units are organized in a rational and efficient layout, each specially adapted to meet the requirement of the sunlight and ventilation. Ultimately, the program is generated into two parts. Public space is stretched over the ground floor to stimulate more campus activities. While classrooms and other volumes are built on the second floor and above to ensure sufficient sunlight and ventilation.

Also, the design combines the teaching space required for internationalization and localization. On the ground floor, there are laboratories and public classrooms, including other functional spaces including reading rooms, the concert hall, art lounge, dance rooms, art rooms, calligraphy rooms, the experts communication center, the school history room and gallery. These diverse spaces are bonded organically and The “Immersed” teaching space experience is achieved by blurring the boundary of architecture, interior and landscape. The international academic exchange center includes offices, training space and a dining room. The design combines the teaching space required for internationalization and localization. It is a second level of activity space between classroom and ground activity space, and allowed students to play for break.

The architectural form of the ground floor draws references from Jiangnan watertown buildings. The spatial units are organized to create a comfortable-scale campus, among which are inserted with “Streets, Lanes, Courtyards and Pocket parks” to intensify the sense of community. Such interesting and friendly spaces, small but elegant and cosy, are interconnected to give the children an open, quiet and comfortable ambience, seeking to trigger their interaction and communication.

The pitched roofs are clad with grey tiles, one of the most common traditional Chinese building materials. The tiles not only function as heat preservation and water resistance for the roof, but also bring about a trace of elegance and tranquility to the entire campus.

이우 외국어학교 이우 외국어학교는 저장성의 인구 밀도가 높은 도시 중 하나인 이우(Yiwu)의 주요 도심지에 넓은 규모로 계획된 교육 공간이다. 해외에서 돌아온 중국인들을 위한 학교로, 48개의 초등학교 교실과 24개의 중학교 교실로 이뤄져 있다. 디자인은 획일적이고 근엄한 일반적인 학교가 아닌 친밀감을 불러일으키고, 아이들의 호기심을 자극하는 활기찬 캠퍼스로 조성됐다. 아이들의 관점에서 디자인된 학교는 공부와 창의성에 대한 열망을 자극하고자 “활동적이고, 공동체 마음을 기르고, 사회적인” 교육환경으로 만들어졌다. 국제적인 추세에 맞춰 이우 지역의 전통적인 문화가 결합되어 있어 아이들에게 편안한 교육공간을 제공한다.

대지는 45도 각도로 회전된 직사각형으로, 비슷한 규모의 중국의 다른 학교들과 비교했을 때 매우 제한적인 조건이었다. 이 제한된 대지 조건 안에서 이우 외국어학교의 아늑하고 편안한 캠퍼스를 만드는 것은 설계의 주요 목적이었다. 프로그램은 두 개 부분(교육과 공공공간)으로 나눠졌다. 학교 1층에는 넓게 퍼지고 연장된 공공 공간들이 마련되어, 학생들의 다양한 캠퍼스 활동들을 촉진한다. 반면 교실들과 교실을 제외한 학교의 시설들은 충분한 햇빛과 통풍을 보장하기 위해 2층부터 그 위층에 배치됐다. 각각의 교육 교실과 공간적 모듈들은 기능과 최적의 면적을 연구하여 도출됐다. 또한, 교육 유닛(교실)들은 효율적인 배치를 통해 각각의 공간마다 개별적으로 햇빛과 통풍의 요건을 만족하도록 구성됐다.

학교의 전체적인 디자인은 국제화와 중국 현지화를 통합하는 것을 추구한다. 1층에는 독서실, 콘서트 홀, 예술 라운지, 안무실, 서예실, 전문 커뮤니케이션 센터, 학교 역사실, 갤러리와 같은 수업 외 기능을 할 수 있는 공간과 실험실과 공동교육 교실 등이 있다. 이러한 다양한 공간들은 유기적으로 결속되어 건축물과 인테리어디자인, 풍경 사이의 경계를 흐리게 만들어 “교육에 몰입되는” 공간적 경험을 학생들에게 선사한다. 국제 학문 교류 센터는 사무실, 훈련 공간, 그리고 학생 식당을 포함한다. 이는 교실과 지상 활동 공간(1층의 공공공간) 사이에 존재하는 학생들의 활동 공간이며, 학생들이 학교 내에서 쉬는 동안 놀 수 있는 공간을 제공하는 것이다.

1층은 중국 지앙난(Jiangnan) 수향마을의 건물의 형태가 반영됐다. 공간적 유닛들은 편안한 규모의 캠퍼스를 만들기 위해 구성됐으며, 그 중 몇몇은 공동체적인 느낌을 강화시키기 위해 “길거리, 골목길, 안뜰, 소공원”같은 공간이 건축물 곳곳에 배치됐다. 작지만 공간이지만 고급스러우면서도 아늑하고, 아이들의 흥미를 불러일으키는 친숙한 공간들은 아이들 간의 상호활동과 커뮤니케이션을 이끌어내며, 누구에게나 열려있는 조용하고 편안한 분위기를 제공한다.

중국 전통 건축 자재인 회색 타일로 덮여 있는 경사진 지붕은 건물 내 열을 보존하거나 내수성 등 기능적으로 작용할 뿐 아니라, 건축물의 우아하면서도 평온한 자태를 보여준다.
