The first zero energy factory in Korea In February 2019, the excavation process for a general factory design was already underway. Meanwhile, the owner was strongly encouraged to redesign it as a “zero energy plant”. The first reason was because of the company motto: “Contributing to human health through air and energy technology,” hanging on the wall of the executive office of Kim Jung-hwan, the client of this project and CEO of Himpel Co., Ltd. Himpel is a domestic ventilation specialist and is known for its fans and ventilation systems. If its building is built as a zero-energy building certified building, it would be certain that it can provide a pleasant and healthy working environment for its factory workers. Second, the product manufactured by Himpel is a “heat recovery ventilator” that is required to be installed in zero-energy buildings. If we complete the nation’s first zero-energy plant with a heat recovery ventilation system, its effects can be experienced firsthand in the factory, and it is possible to naturally witness the supply of many zero-energy buildings.

With respect to the layout and plan of the previously delivered general plant design, we designed changes and additions to the facade, the outer layer of the factory, mechanical and electrical equipment, and the monitoring system as a whole. In this process, the building had to receive a building energy efficiency rating of 1++, meet level 5 of a zero energy building standards, and the effects needed to be felt and acknowledged by the executive and staff members. It was also important that the motto be conveyed in the facade. First, in order to incorporate the motto into the facade design, the solar panels and the aluminum composite panels were modularized in the same size. Then, dark solar panels were placed in the lower part, and white aluminum composite panels were placed densely above, visualizing the rise of fresh air. As the site is open all around, aluminum composite panels of similar color to solar panels are installed on the north side, where there is no photovoltaic effect, creating a uniform facade design. It also expresses Himpel’s motto that air produced through clean energy contributes to human health and was designed to look like a giant air purifier that releases fresh air into the city.

Lastly, in order to really see the advantages of a zero energy factory, we reinforced the insulation and airtightness of the floors, roofs and walls, and applied technology of securing natural ventilation and light by expanding the surface of windows. Furthermore, in order to save energy for cooling in the summer and heating in the winter, we used triple glazing system windows with excellent insulation and airtight performance. The heat recovery ventilation system not only saves energy but also improves indoor air quality. In addition, solar panels were installed on the rooftop and exterior walls for energy production.

With this, the Himpel Zero Energy Factory was able to reduce energy consumption by 35% through a passive design, and with the installation of solar panels the total amount of energy saved is 53%. In January 2020, the Himpel Zero Energy Factory was recognized for its excellent energy performance and was the first to obtain a building energy efficiency rating of 1++ and grade 5 of zero energy building standards. The total construction cost is about 5,200 million won, where approximately 700 million won (15% increase) was added to upgrade it from a general factory (grade 1) to a zero energy plant (1++ & grade 5). Since 767 million won was subsidized by the Korea Energy Agency and the province of Gyeonggi, the actual private surcharge was increased by 13.7% compared to the initial construction cost of 4,500 million won.
