We would like to propose a way to make a small family-run shop a driving force to revitalize an aging area. In addition, we hope that this small store will be a place to fully capture the location in time. First, when remodeling old buildings, the question of whether investing in a national budget is the only way for urban regeneration. When a building that has lost its function or structural life is demolished and people in the neighborhood make space one by one, we think this is a true urban regeneration. We propose a small family shop with a space for people to connect with each other as a small beginning for this method.

This neighborhood has a lot of history. In the vicinity of the site, there was a military prison and Ulsan Magistrate’s Office. It was the most commercially prosperous place in the economic development period, but now it has fallen into the old town and people rarely visit it. That’s why there are empty inns around, and most of the buildings are old. A well named “Okkolsaem,” which has an old story, was saved through urban regeneration and the neighborhood was renovated, but few people came. Our society is undergoing many changes now.

Younger generations start their own shops in the aging downtown and make something, but they have to be given their homes by the older generations having buildings. Gentrification is similar to the generational conflict in society. This generational conflict can be healed by a connection to the family. The commonality between the retiring older generation and the younger generation coming into their heyday is to start something new. The generation of children who start their own life and the generation of parents who begin their second life will understand each other and find common ground through family stores. When the owner visited the office, his first comment was that he wanted to make a building that reflects time.

What I realized as I visited the site several times as a designer was not just to reflect the past, but to create a building that would bring happiness to the memories of those who visit here in the future.  Furthermore, I wanted to employ the meaning of urban regeneration so that a small building in this neighborhood would change the aging appearance and revitalize the neighborhood. Since it is a small building on a small site, the building is constructed vertically.

The vertical configuration is a rotating zigzag of stacking layers, and various interspaces are formed through the overlap between the vertical space and the outer wall. Since there are many houses around, commercial building facades are separated so that they do not interfere with the surroundings. The layered interior spaces are organized into one space so that the sections of each disappear. People will recognize the architecture in the neighborhood alleys and move inside while feeling a variety of time changes. The 1,549 copper plates on the building’s skin were made by tapping and baking them one by one. They are all different. The copper plates oxidize over time and we used the element of fire to make the time of oxidation different for each copper plate. The building will change in appearance over time. The copper plates of the door were finished by wiping with brine to change the oxidation method.

The external staircase and the internal space were separated by a gap of 300mm so that the spaces were vertically connected to each other. Through this, the people in the glass space and the people in the movement line who travel each floor always share the same time. Currently, our society is going through many conflicts. For example, urban generation, gentrification, conflict between regions, and strife between generations. All of these problems are due to a lack of understanding between different groups. After all, people need time to understand each other to solve problems. We expect that our society will move to a healthier atmosphere when a small family owned shop in our neighborhood serves as a place to connect different people.
