지역 산업의 쇠퇴와 도시로의 인구 집중화로 인한 지방 중소도시의 소멸은 현대 사회에서 사회적 문제로 대두되고 있다. 이에 따라 발생한 노후 건축물과 방치된 빈집은 공공의 해결 과제가 되었다. 전주 팔복동은 과거에 제조업을 기반으로 한 산업 단지가 부흥기를 이끈 지역으로, 현재는 활기를 잃고 멈춘 채 방치되고 있었다. 가동을 멈춘 공간과 오랜 세월 방치된 노후 건축물, 기울어진 담벼락은 더 이상 시간이 흐르지 않은 채 옛 팔복동의 향기를 간직하고 있었다.

카페 돌돌은 침체된 골목을 개선하고 마을 활성화를 위한 도시재생 프로젝트의 일환으로 리모델링을 진행한 프로젝트다. 건축가는 잠재력을 갖춘 유휴 공간을 새롭게 단장하여 골목과 마을에 활기를 더한 공간으로 만들었다. 평지붕이면서 특색 없는 무채색 철근 콘크리트 건물이었는데, 녹슬고 기울어진 건물과는 대조적으로 마당의 오동나무는 풍성한 잎을 펼치며 점차 몸집을 키우고 있었다. 건축가는 마을의 옛 모습과 세월의 흔적을 최대한 유지한 채 색다른 공간을 경험할 방안을 고민했다. 기존 건물이 가지던 질감을 그대로 수용해 마을 풍경에 이질감을 줄이려 했고, 차가운 무채색의 외관과 대비되는 내부의 붉은 톤은 색 온도감의 대비를 통해 공간을 경험하는 사람에게 반전 있는 다양한 모습을 선보인다. 

작은 단칸방의 모듈로 구성된 협소한 공간의 내벽을 철거하고, 오래된 구조는 보강하여 새로운 구조를 신설했다. 기존 건물은 마당을 통해 각 방으로 들어가는 형태였으나, 터줏대감과 같은 오동나무를 극적으로 보여주고자 일부 벽을 철거하여 진입로를 우회하는 새로운 시퀀스를 만들었다. 진입 마당 쪽으로 나앉은 거석은 기존 출입구 공간을 차지해 사람들의 발걸음을 자연스레 좁은 진입로로 방향을 틀게 한다. 좁고 어두운 진입로를 지나 마주하게 되는 중정은 지붕 슬래브를 비워내 탁 트인 시야를 제공하는데, 오동나무와 함께 밝은 빛이 더해져 기존의 어두운 진입 시퀀스와 대비되어 예상치 못한 반전의 효과를 발휘한다. 중정은 주방, 카운터와 카페 공간을 자연스럽게 분리하며, 모든 공간의 동선이 교차되는 구심점이 되었다.

The decline of regional industries and population in urban areas have led to the disappearance of small and medium-sized cities, which has become a social issue in modern society. The resulting dilapidated buildings and abandoned houses have become public challenges that need to be addressed. Palbok-dong in Jeon-ju, once a thriving industrial complex based on manufacturing, has now lost its vitality and remains neglected. The idle spaces, long-abandoned old buildings, and leaning walls hold the lingering scent of old Palbok-dong, as if time has stopped.

 

Cafe Doldol, a remodeling project, is part of an urban regeneration initiative aimed at revitalizing the village and improving the depressed alleyways. The architect refreshed a dormant space with potential, transforming it into a vibrant area that energizes the alley and village. The building, once a flat-roofed, featureless, monochrome reinforced concrete structure, now contrasts with the rusty, leaning buildings around it. The architect sought ways to preserve the old appearance and the traces of time while offering a unique spatial experience. The aim was to minimize the sense of discord with the village landscape by retaining the texture of the existing building. The warm red tones of the interior contrast with the cold, monochrome exterior, providing a variety of surprising and diverse experiences for visitors.

 

The internal walls were removed from the narrow space composed of small, single-room modules, and the old structure was reinforced to accommodate a new structure. The original building allowed entry to each room through the yard, but some walls were removed to dramatically showcase the old paulownia tree in the yard spreading its lush leaves and growing steadily, creating a new sequence that bypasses the entry path. The large stone in the entry yard occupies the space of the former entrance, naturally guiding people along the narrow entry path. The central courtyard, encountered after passing through the narrow and dark entry path, offers an open view with the roof slab removed, adding bright light and contrasting with the previously dark entry sequence, creating an unexpected and contrasting effect. The courtyard naturally separates the kitchen, counter, and cafe spaces, becoming the focal point where the flow of all spaces intersects.
