Lyoolee Hair Clinic has been renovated from a brick building constructed in a typical 1980’s style which is located in a mixed commercial and residential area and is used to accommodate a specialized program for hair transplants. The client required various things.

First, the renovation needed to create a comfortable space for guests and make it different from similar medical facilities.

Second, it should be planned to provide a certain level of privacy for the guests visiting this hair transplant center.

Third, the spaces for employees should be comfortable and separated from those for the guests so that the staff can provide a good quality of service to the patients. Lastly, though the inside of the clinic maintains a cozy space, which is the main characteristic of the house, the exterior of the clinic should be distinctive.

The former house was a structure in which the ground floor, where the landlord resided, was separated from the underground, which was leased out. Thus, a large-scale repair work was necessary. The existing restroom on the first floor was removed and the underground was connected to the ground level in a vertical line so that the house could be used as a whole. The three floors connected by this work were divided into three zones. The underground was designed as surgery and treatment spaces, the first floor planned for a reception and consultation space, and the second floor for the employees to rest and to prepare the things required by the doctor.

The main facade was to incorporate as much as possible the original structure of the house. The finishing material of the original house was preserved except the extension on the second floor. The extension of the facade on the second floor was finished with sand-blasted U-glass to provide visual privacy and abundant sunlight to the rest area for the staff.

The uneven shape of the terrace walls and the balcony of the former house were connected as a unified form by using a wooden screen. This wood screen acts as an “Urban Screen” and completes the building shape that not only allows the house to maintain its coziness but also guarantees privacy for the patients even though the clinic is visible. In addition, the louvers prevent the direct observation from people passing by on the street, but provide a private consultation room which is open from inside to outside.

The interspace that the wooden louvered screen creates with either the existing wall on the first floor or the U-glass wall on the second floor was visually connected, but spatially separated. Also, it creates a transfer space between the city and the clinic, which are spatially connected, but visually shielded.
