가양 8단지 임대아파트는 준공 후 30년이 지난 노후 단지로 1,110세대가 거주하고 있지만 커뮤니티 시설은 관리동 건물이 유일하다. SH서울주택공사는 2층 독서실 공간을 작은 도서관으로 변경하고 리모델링에 따른 구조보강 및 외관 개선을 요청하였다. 책을 읽는다는 것은 어떤 지식을 탐험하는 여행의 여정과도 같다. 건축가는 이곳에 들어설 작은 도서관을 여행하는 것 같은 공간으로 만들고자 했다. 주민들과의 협의를 통해 기본적인 기능은 1층 기존 시설은 존치하고, 경로당 내부 공간을 재정비했다. 뿐만 아니라, 단지 내 입주자 말고도 외부에서도 방문하여 생기를 더 할 수 있도록 도서관 겸 북카페를 주요한 프로그램을 배치하였다.

 

그렇게 만들어진 여행도서관은 지식을 탐험하는 작은 종이배를 연상하게 만든다. 누군가에겐 종이배로, 범선의 돛으로, 반짝이는 보석으로 다양한 해석의 여지를 남기기도 한다. 배의 모양을 모티브로 아치를 반복적으로 배치했다. 아치 구조는 도서관의 주요 요소인 책장이며, 푸른 색상의 변화를 통해 역동적인 파도의 이미지를 떠오르게 한다. 아치 책장의 사이에는 소파형, 창가형 좌석 공간과 경사형 선반 타입의 책장이 있어 다양한 사용자들 요구에 대응하면서 다채로운 쓰임 있는 공간들을 만들어 냈다. 도서관의 중앙부 또한 긴 테이블과 작은 테이블, 테이블형 전시 책장을 배치하여 공간에 재미와 함께 다양한 요구를 수용할 수 있도록 했다.

Gayang 8 Complex rental housing is an old apartment complex that is 30 years old and has 1,110 units, but only a management building exists as a community facility. SH Seoul Housing Corporation requested that the reading room space on the second floor be converted into a small library, including structural reinforcement and exterior improvements. Reading a book is like a journey of exploring knowledge. The architect wanted to make the small library into a space that feels like one is traveling. Through consultation with residents, the basic functions of the existing facilities on the first floor were maintained, and the interior space of the senior center was reorganized. In addition, the library and book café were arranged as a major program so that it could be visited and enlivened by people other than residents of the complex.

 

The traveling library that was born is reminiscent of a small paper boat on a quest for knowledge. For some, it is a paper boat, for others it is the sail of a sailboat, and for others it is a sparkling jewel, leaving room for many interpretations. The repetition of the arches is based on the shape of a ship. The arch structure is the main element of the library, the bookshelves, and the blue color evokes the image of dynamic waves. Between the arches are sofa-type and window-type seating areas, as well as tilted shelf-type bookcases, creating a variety of usable spaces that respond to the needs of different users. In the center of the library, long tables, small tables, and table-type display bookcases are also arranged to add interest to the space and accommodate various needs.
