Winship Cancer Institute

The Winship Cancer Institute is a 17-story facility that offers more than 450,000 square feet of inpatient, outpatient, and research facilities. The building houses comprehensive oncology facilities including inpatient beds, surgical capabilities, infusion therapy, outpatient clinics, diagnostic imaging, linear accelerators, and areas dedicated to wellness, rehabilitation and clinical research. Designed to accommodate patient needs, the new facility serves as a new paradigm in hospital design and ultimately improves access to cancer treatment and services in Atlanta, Georgia and elsewhere.

 

The focus of the building's design is a series of two-story “care communities,” each focused on a specific type of cancer. General services throughout the hospital are arranged into one-stop destinations that combine examination, consultation, infusion and support functions to form communities tailored to each patient's care. This not only minimizes waiting time for patients, but also allows patients, families, and professionals to visit both inpatients and outpatients. The Care Communities influenced the design of the exterior to be easily accessible from Atlanta's iconic Peachtree Street. Patients and visitors are welcomed with a hotel-like entrance that meets the street and leads into the main lobby. Within the building, a retail boutique, pharmacy, wellness center, café, and multi-purpose spaces for future offerings of yoga, music therapy, education, and art therapy seamlessly provide patients with an all-in-one treatment experience.

 

The project is on track with a projected Energy Use Intensity (pEUI) of 136 kBtu per square foot per year, a 32% improvement over the typical U.S. hospital, which consumes an average of 220 kBtu per square foot per year. The efficient energy design consumes 40% less energy per year than the average hospital in Atlanta. The high-performance façade optimizes glazing and window-to-wall ratios, and the building features energy-efficient recovery mechanical equipment with cooling beams and direct fresh air units.

 

The innovative and reinvented design of Winship at Emory Midtown reflects the medical advances taking place in cancer treatment and research. As a wellness center, it rethinks how urban medical centers relate to their neighborhoods, helps them remain at the forefront of cancer care, and raises the bar for future healthcare facility design.

건물 설계의 중심은 각각 특정 유형의 암에 초점을 맞춘 2층짜리 "케어 커뮤니티"이다. 병원 전체의 일반적인 서비스는 검사, 상담, 주입 및 지원 기능을 결합한 원스톱 목적지로 구성되어 각 환자의 치료에 알맞은 커뮤니티를 형성한다. 이는 환자가 기다려야 할 필요성을 최소화할 뿐만 아니라 환자와 가족, 전문가가 입원 환자와 외래 환자를 모두 방문할 수 있도록 한다. 케어 커뮤니티는 애틀랜타의 상징적인 피치트리 스트리트에서 접근하기 쉽도록 입면 디자인에 영향을 미쳤다. 거리와 만나고 메인 로비로 이어지는 호텔과 같은 구조로 환자와 방문객을 환영한다. 건물 내에는 소매 부티크, 약국, 웰빙 센터, 카페 및 요가, 음악 치료, 교육 및 미술 치료의 향후 제공을 위한 다목적 공간이 환자의 전체 치료 경험을 원활하게 제공한다.

 

이 프로젝트는 연간 제곱피트당 136kBtu의 예상 에너지 사용 집약도(pEUI)로 순조롭게 진행되고 있으며, 연간 평균 제곱피트당 220kBtu를 소비하는 미국의 일반 병원보다 32% 개선된 것이다. 효율적인 에너지 설계는 애틀랜타의 평균 병원보다 연간 40% 적은 에너지를 소비한다. 고성능 외관은 글레이징과 창 대 벽 비율을 최적화하고 건물은 냉각 빔과 직접 외부 공기 장치를 갖춘 에너지 효율적인 복구 기계 장비를 갖추고 있다.

 

Winship at Emory Midtown의 혁신적이고 재창조된 디자인은 암 치료 및 연구 분야에서 일어나고 있는 의료 발전을 반영한다. 웰빙센터로서 도시의료원이 이웃과 어떤 관계를 맺는가를 재고하며 암 치료의 선봉에 남도록 돕고 향후 의료 시설 설계의 기준을 높인다.
