The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

In the heart of Los Angeles, at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is the world’s premier movie museum. Situated on the famed “Miracle Mile,” the museum preserves and breathes new life into the former 1939 May Company department store, now re-named the Saban Building. Celebrating its history and imagining new possibilities, the additions to the building that date from 1946 have been removed and replaced with a spherical building that features the 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater and the Dolby Family Terrace with views towards Hollywood. The revitalized campus features more than 50,000 square feet of gallery space, two theaters, cutting-edge project spaces, an outdoor piazza, the rooftop terrace, an active education studio, a restaurant, and store.

 

Renzo Piano said, “The Academy Museum gives us the opportunity to honor the past while creating a building for the future―in fact, for the possibility of many futures. The historic Saban Building is a wonderful example of Streamline Moderne style, which preserves the way people envisioned the future in 1939. The new structure, the Sphere Building, is a form that seems to lift off the ground into the perpetual, imaginary voyage through space and time that is moviegoing. By connecting these two experiences we create something that is itself like a movie. You go from sequence to sequence, from the exhibition galleries to the film theater and the terrace, with everything blending into one experience.”

로스앤젤레스 중심부의 월셔 대로(Wilshire Boulevard)와 패어팩스 거리(Fairfax Avenue) 교차로에 위치한 아카데미 영화 뮤지엄은 세계 최고의 영화 박물관이다. 잘 알려진 “미라클 마일(Miracle Mile)”에 위치한 이 박물관은 1939년에 완공된 메이 컴퍼니(May Company) 백화점의 이름을 사반 빌딩(Saban Building)으로 변경하는 등 건물을 보존하고 새로운 생명을 불어넣고 있다. 역사를 기념하고 새로운 가능성을 꿈꾸기 위해 1946년에 증축된 증측부를 제거하였으며 1,000석 규모의 데이비드 게펀(David Geffen) 극장과 할리우드 전경이 보이는 돌비 패밀리 테라스(Dolby Family Terrace)를 갖춘 돔형 건물로 교체했다. 새로운 활력이 불어 넣어진 캠퍼스에는 약 4,645㎡ 이상의 갤러리 공간, 2개의 극장, 최첨단 프로젝트 공간, 야외 광장, 옥상 테라스, 활동 교육 스튜디오, 레스토랑 및 상점이 있다.

 

렌조 피아노는 “아카데미 박물관은 미래, 실제로는 다양한 미래의 가능성을 위한 건물을 만들면서 과거를 존중할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 유서 깊은 사반 빌딩은 1939년 당시 사람들이 미래를 상상한 방식을 보존하는 유선형 근대 양식(Streamline Moderne style)의 훌륭한 예이다. 새로운 구조물인 스피어 빌딩(Sphere Building)은 영화 관람, 말하자면 시공간을 지나 끊임없이 계속되는 상상의 항해 속으로 이륙하는 듯한 형태다. 이 두 가지 경험을 연결함으로써 우리는 그 자체로 영화와 같은 것을 만들었다. 시퀀스에서 시퀀스로, 전시 갤러리에서 영화관과 테라스로 이동하면서 모든 것이 하나의 경험으로 혼합된다”라고 말했다.
