Musimjae (無心齋) is a name given by the owner early on in the construction process. "Musim," emphasized in Buddhism, refers to "a mind without discrimination or delusion," which means a clear and bright state of mind that is free from discrimination which leads to understanding and realization, riding the flow of the vast universe. However, it was not easy to imagine a space for "musim (absence of worldly desires)" living. After a long discussion, Musimjae was designed as a space where the owner could be free from all the troubles of the world and return to an area full of oneself the moment he enters.

 

It's a house where human existence is juxtaposed with the vast flow of nature, making life and death nothing in the end. To achieve this, it was first decided to utilize the excellent natural landscape of Gyeryongsan Mountain, where the land is located. All the living spaces in this house are located on the side facing the mountain. The living room and study have large windows beginning at the floor, bringing in the beautiful view of Gyeryongsan Mountain. In particular, the living room on the second floor provides a wider view using walls that open gradually toward the window and the balcony railing was designed to be as transparent as possible to avoid obstruction. The windows of the master bedroom and guest room are designed to bring the sky, mountains, and forests closer at the height of the furniture that stays the longest (bed), the skylight of the loft shows the stars of the night sky, and the window of the stairway faces Sambulbong, the highest peak of Gyeryongsan Mountain, as one walks up.

 

Musimjae is a small house with a simple and unadorned design, covering an area of ​​less than 198 square meters. However, it responds to the topography of the site and has a different interior space height from typical houses due to the gable roof structure. The materials, colors, and details were meticulously selected, but the spatial profile is understated yet elegant, offering rich and varied perspectives. The aim was to have just the necessary elements, nothing more, nothing less. Nonetheless, it is hoped that this dwelling, which lacks any excess, embodies the discerning mind of the owner who sought to achieve a nonchalant atmosphere

무심재(無心齋)는 건축주가 일찍이 지은 이름이다. 불교에서 강조하는 무심은 무분별심(無分別心)을 뜻하는 것으로 ‘분별이 없는 마음, 망상이 없는 깨어있는 마음’을 말한다. 즉, 이해득실로 귀결되는 분별에서 벗어나 거대한 우주의 흐름에 올라타는 맑고 밝은 마음의 상태이다. 하지만 무심한 주거공간을 상상하기란 참으로 쉽지 않았다. 긴 논의 과정 끝에, 무심재는 주인이 귀가하여 현관에 들어서는 순간 세상의 모든 번뇌에서 풀려나 오로지 충만한 자기 자신으로 돌아올 수 있는 공간으로 구현됐다.

 

조그만 인간 존재 의미를 거대한 자연과 병치시켜 유장한 흐름 속에 삶도 죽음도 아무것도 아닌 게 되는 그런 집. 그것을 이루기 위해 먼저 대지가 위치한 계룡산의 뛰어난 자연경관을 활용하기로 하였다. 이 집의 모든 거주하는 방들은 산을 면하는 쪽에 배치하였다. 거실과 서재에는 바닥부터 시작되는 큰 창으로 넉넉하게 계룡산 능선을 끌어들였다. 특히 2층에 위치한 거실은 창을 향해 점점 열리는 각도의 벽을 이용해 더 넓은 시야를 확보하고, 방해가 되지 않도록 발코니 난간도 최대한 투명하게 디자인 하였다. 안방과 손님방의 창은 가장 오래 머무르는 가구(침대)의 높이를 기준으로 하늘과 산과 숲이 다가오게 하였고, 다락의 천창은 밤하늘의 별을, 계단실 창은 걸어 올라오면서 계룡산 최고봉인 삼불봉을 마주한다.

 

무심재는 아주 간결하고 소박한 연면적 60평도 안되는 작은 집이다. 조형도 단순하기 그지 없다. 하지만 대지 고저차에의 대응, 그리고 박공지붕으로 인해 보통의 주택과는 다른 내부 공간 높이를 지닌다. 재료와 색채, 디테일은 검박하게 결정되었지만 공간의 프로파일은 은근 당당하며, 풍부하고 기품 있는 볼륨과 다양한 시점을 제공한다. 모든 것을 더도 덜도 없이 딱 필요한 만큼만 갖추려 했다. 그렇다 해도 무심하고자 하는 건축주의 분별 있는 마음을 담기에 부족함이 없는 주거 공간이길 바란다.
