This project is a simple project to plan a coffee shop, a Korean restaurant, as well as an accommodation and lounge for employees on two sites facing the coastal road at the southern end of Ganghwado Island. Initially, the client commissioned to design a private brand coffee shop and Korean restaurant, and planned the interior, but the business direction changed and the interior was constructed with a brand manual. We planned gifts for customers to visit, both on the inside and outside, but it is a project that leaves us regretful that we only set up the outer surface.

 

Heungwang-ri, Hwado-myeon, has been a familiar village for a long time, but the site commissioned by the client was a spot full of the energy of heaven and earth. At night, the yang energy of Manisan Mountain descends, and in the morning, the energy of Heungwang-ri mud flats that have been accumulated for hundreds of thousands of eons ascends. Moreover, the five pine trees and wide rock at the corner of the site, which the former landowner moved and planted from Manisan Mountain a few years ago, provided design inspiration. Now that the tree branches have settled and they seem natural than awkward, it seems as if this was where they were born. Removing or moving them to build a building also seemed wrong, so we placed two buildings to avoid the roots and branches. Then, a simple mass was made by building walls of plain white where the sun, moon, starts, sky and wind would stay. Daybreak at dawn, light rapids at midday, sunset at evening, moonlight and starlight at night, and depending on the weather and time, pine trees and clouds descend in different shapes on the white walls, creating a plain landscape of different lights and shades every moment.

강화도 남단 해안도로에 접한 두 사이트에 커피숍과 한식당, 그리고 이곳에 근무하는 종업원의 숙소와 휴게실을 계획하는 단순한 프로젝트이다. 애초에는 건축주 개인 브랜드 커피숍과 한식당에 대한 설계를 의뢰받아 인테리어까지 계획했으나, 사업 방향이 바뀌어 실내는 브랜드 메뉴얼로 시공하였다. 방문할 고객들에게 선사할 선물을 안팎으로 계획했었는데, 겉껍데기만 세우게 되어 아쉬움이 남는 프로젝트이다.

화도면 흥왕리는 전부터 익히 알고 있는 마을이었지만, 건축주로부터 의뢰받은 사이트는 누가 봐도 천지의 기운이 충만한 명당이다. 밤엔 마니산의 양기가 내려앉고, 아침엔 억겁의 세월 동안 켜켜이 쌓인 흥왕리 갯벌 기운이 올라오는 터이다. 더구나 대지 모퉁이에는 전 토지주가 수년 전 마니산에서 이주시켜 심은 소나무 다섯 그루와 너럭바위가 디자인 영감을 제공해 주었다. 이젠 제법 나뭇가지도 자리가 잡혀서 어색하지 않고 자연스럽기까지 하니, 여기가 이들의 태생인 듯하다. 건물을 세우기 위해 이놈들을 없애거나, 옮기는 것도 몹쓸 짓 같아 뿌리와 가지를 피해서 두 채의 건물을 배치했다. 그리고 해, 달, 별, 하늘, 그리고 바람이 머물 하얀 무지(無地)의 벽들을 세워 단순한 매스를 만들었다. 새벽엔 여명이, 한낮엔 빛 여울이, 저녁엔 낙조가, 밤에는 달빛과 별빛이, 그리고 날씨와 시간에 따라 소나무와 구름이 하얀 벽에 다른 모습으로 내려앉아 어리니, 시시각각 농담(濃淡)을 달리하는 담백(淡白)한 풍경이 연출된다.
