Illsin Hall is a dormitory for Ajou University, which means ‘to be renewed day by day’. It can accommodate up to 800 students, including medical school and nursing college students, and enables students to stay in one building on the university campus that emphasizes communication and convergence.
The architect efficiently organized the common space of the dormitory, planning the community lounge as the core space of the dormitory and allowing access from various directions of the campus. The open terraced lounge, which is planned across the main public space of the basement and first floors, has a high ceiling and a curtain wall that opens outward, giving a young, open and dynamic feeling. From here, going up the terraced lounge naturally leads to a multi-purpose meeting space where various exchanges and small gatherings of students take place. The residential space and gender-based spaces are not separated by separate masses, but divided by floors.
The exterior of Illsin Hall largely replicates the prototype of the International Studies Institute behind it. The architect meticulously refined the layout, shape, and floor plan to fit the program to accommodate twice that number. Thus, a plan bent by about 60 degrees is placed along the axes of two buildings and the topography of the campus, and the living areas are organized in groups on both sides of the platform and the lounge. The unit types are a single room, a double room, and a quadruple room, which are divided into corner type, extended type, and general type. A panoramic view of Suwon city beyond the campus can be viewed. The facade was completed by gathering the characteristic elements of the buildings on the Ajou University campus. The use of red bricks and bright silver aluminum is the result of much contemplation by the architect regarding the overall context of the campus. As an alternative to the weight felt in the brick mass composed of a rectangular punched window and horizontal ribbon window, a horizontal strip of aluminum protruding from the brick side divided by a vertical window was added. The earthy red bricks with natural and stable beauty creates a feeling of vitality in the dormitory that is a residential building, and the bright metallic aluminum finishes it with a refined language.
아주대학교 일신관
일신관日新館은 ‘날로 새로워 진다’라는 뜻의 아주대학교 기숙사다. 의과대학과 간호대학을 비롯한 학생 약 800여 명이 이용가능한 규모이며, 소통과 융합을 강조하는 대학교 캠퍼스 안에서 학생들이 한 건물을 사용하며 생활하고 있다.
건축가는 기숙사의 공용공간을 효율적으로 구성하였는데, 커뮤니티 라운지를 기숙사의 핵심공간으로 설정하고 캠퍼스 여러 방향에서 커뮤니티 라운지로 접근이 가능하도록 계획했다. 주요 공공공간인 지하층과 1층에 걸쳐 계획된 트여있는 계단식 라운지는 높은 천장고, 밖을 향해 열린 커튼월 처리로 젊고 개방되며 역동적인 느낌을 준다. 이곳에서 계단식 라운지를 따라 올라가면 대학생들의 다양한 교류와 소통이 일어나는 다목적 모임공간으로 자연스럽게 이어진다. 주거공간, 성별 공간 분리는 별도의 매스로 구분된 것이 아니라 층별로 구획되어 나뉘어진다.
일신관의 외형은 크게 뒷편에 있는 국제학사 프로토타입을 복제했는데, 건축가는 그 두 배에 해당하는 인원을 수용할 수 있는 프로그램에 맞게 배치와 형태, 평면 등을 면밀히 다듬었다. 60도 정도 꺾인 평면이 캠퍼스 내 두 개의 건물 축과 지형에 따라 들어서 있으며, 승강장과 휴게 라운지를 중심으로 양쪽에 사생실들이 그룹으로 구성된다. 각 방은 1인실, 2인실, 4인실이 있는데 세부적으로 코너형, 확장형, 일반형으로 나누어진다. 캠퍼스 너머 수원 도심의 전경을 조망할 수 있다. 입면은 아주대학교 캠퍼스 내 건물들의 특징적인 요소들이 모여 완성됐다. 붉은색 벽돌과 밝은 은색 알루미늄의 사용은 캠퍼스 전체적인 맥락을 고민한 건축가의 결과물이다. 벽돌면을 도려낸 듯한 사각 펀칭창이나 수평방향의 리본창으로 구성된 벽돌 매스에서 느껴지는 무게감에 대한 다른 대안으로 수직창으로 나누어지는 벽돌면에 돌출된 알루미늄 수평띠가 더해져 있다. 이는 기숙사와 같은 주거용 건물에서 자연적, 안정적 아름다움이 느껴지는 흙빛이 도는 붉은 색 벽돌과 생활의 활력을 느끼게 하며, 밝은 메탈릭 컬러의 알루미늄이 세련된 언어로 마무리한다.
