SCH Housing “an den Schichtgründen” is low-priced housing with a refreshing whiff of color.

The finely detailed construction of the rust-colored, perforated aluminum balustrades sets off the carefully layered and vibrantly cadenced forms. The balustrades frame the airy and attractive apartments and mediate between the individual unit and the spaces of the city beyond. The buildings' powerfully sculptural facades structure the 130m long building front into well-proportioned segments and establish clear and legible street addresses, imparting the estate a distinctive urban identity.

The Schichtgründe are a brownfield urban redevelopment zone in Vienna’s historically industrial district of Floridsdorf. The work was dismantled in 2014; in its stead a new-built, high density, largely residential district for 2000 inhabitants has been built. The 200 affordably priced apartments of SCH form the western edge of this urban neighborhood, facing upon the Hans-Czermak-Gasse and the woods and fields beyond it.

SCH's parcel was composed into two urban layers. The street-front is a thin and articulated block, six stories high in the south, seven in the north. The stairwells are located street side; the living rooms and kitchens face west to the street and towards the view. The bedrooms face east onto a sheltered courtyard. The garden-side layer is composed of three compact, five-story blocks. The green space of the courtyard flows between these open blocks and connects it to a green garden and a pedestrian zone to the east.

Rich colour enhances the architecture. The rust-red, metallic-powder coatings of the balustrades accent the dusty rose stucco of the main facades. White window frames and reveals enliven the fronts. The blue, metallic-glazed render of the entry zones is enclosed by precast-concrete walls and canopies whose white-cement surfaces are finely sandblasted for tactile effect. The lively yet harmonious color scheme reinforces and accentuates the architectural composition.

시흐트룬데 사회적 공동주택은 붉은 강판으로 마감된 저층 사회적 공동주택이다. 이 지역 일대는 플로리드스도르프의 역사적인 산업지역인 곳으로, 빈의 산업 지구로 재개발될 계획이었으나 2,000명의 주민을 위한 새로운 고밀도 주거 개발구로 변경되었다. 도시의 서쪽 가장자리에 자리 잡은 스흐트룬데 주택은 200가구를 수용하며, 숲과 들판과 마주보고 있다. 시흐트룬데 공동주택은 크게 두 개로 구분되는데, 상대적으로 남쪽에 배치된 동은 6층, 북쪽에 배치된 동들은 7층이다. 계단은 거리 향해 있고 거실과 주방은 거리와 전망이 있는 서쪽으로 나있다. 침실은 안뜰이 있는 동쪽을 향한다. 정원 쪽 방향에는 3개의 작은 5층 블록으로 되어있다. 중정의 녹지 공간은 개방된 공간 사이를 이어주고 동쪽의 녹색 정원과 보행자 구역 또한 이어준다. 타공 알루미늄판과 부식된 강판 색상을 사용하여 정교하게 표현된 건물로 촘촘한 층을 이루고 선명한 느낌의 형태로 연출되었는데, 세련된 디자인으로 주거 공간의 환경을 높인다. 또한, 원활한 통풍과 각 세대와 도시 공간의 사이의 영역을 긴밀하게 연결한다. 총 130m 길이의 건물 입면에는 독특하면서도 현대적 정체성을 부여하는 발코니와 .다양한 색상의 사용이 건축물의 품질을 높여준다. 난간의 부식된 강판 색상과 금속 분말을 이용한 코팅은 정면에 사용된 먼지 느낌의 장벽토를 보다 눈에 띄게 한다. 흰색 창틀과 문설주는 전면을 생기 있게 해준다. 입구에 파란색 금속 유약을 이용한 렌더링은 촉감을 고려하여 흰색 시멘트 표면에 미세하게 분사된 프리캐스트 콘크리트벽과 캐노피로 둘러 싸여있다. 생기 있고 조화로운 색상을 사용하여 건축의 구성을 강화하고 강조한다.
