The airport expansion houses the new departures and arrivals halls, a multimodal travel center and the areas for security control, customs and baggage reclaim. As the expansion connects directly to the old terminal building, it follows the traditional logic of separating departing and arriving passengers onto different levels. In addition to improving the airport’s overall functionality and the passenger experience, the project also brings adventure and romance back to air travel: the airport now offers a perfect setting for goodbye kisses and welcoming hugs.
The ceiling of the new departures hall plays with the concept of lightness, but combines it with extreme weight. The construction of the column-free departures hall and the massive entrance canopy was enabled by the use of steel structures. These structures are hidden inside the thick ceiling made of prefabricated timber units. The plasticity of the overall form makes the ceiling seem as if it was floating in the air. The contour-line-resembling shapes of the spruce boards turn it into an upside-down version of a three-dimensional map leading the passengers’ thoughts towards the sky above the runway.
The blue exterior cladding makes the security control volume between the new departures hall and the old terminal recognizable already from further away. The blue theme continues indoors: when entering the building, the departing passengers immediately notice the blue security area behind the check-in kiosks.
The first thing the arriving passengers see after having passed through customs, is a freeform nature diorama with trees, shrubs and stones combining the characteristics of Finnish nature with Japanese garden art. When looking up through the opening above the diorama, they will see both the wooden ceiling of the departures hall and the blue sky visible through the skylight.
The expansion was built according to the BREEAM Excellent sustainability standards.
헬싱키 새 출국장의 거대한 조립식 목조 캐노피, 헬싱키국제공항 증축 출국장
공항 확장에는 출국장과 입국장, 복합 여행 센터, 보안 통제구역, 세관 및 수하물 회수 구역이 있다. 확장된 구역은 기존 터미널 건물과 바로 연결되고 기존 로직을 따라서 출국자와 입국자를 다른 층으로 분리했다. 공항의 전반적인 기능과 승객의 경험을 개선해주는 것 외에도 작별 키스와 환영의 포옹을 할 수 있는 환경을 제공해줌으로써 항공 여행에 대한 모험과 로맨스를 떠올릴 수 있을 것이다.
새 출국장의 천장은 거대한 무게임에도 가벼움이라는 콘셉트의 분위기에 걸맞다. 기둥이 없는 출국장과 출입구의 거대한 캐노피의 건설은 철골 구조를 사용했기에 가능했다. 이러한 구조는 조립식 목재 유닛으로 만들어진 두꺼운 천장 내부에 가려져있다. 전체적으로 휘어진 형태의 천장은 공중에 떠 있는 듯한 느낌을 준다. 가문비나무 판자의 등고선 모양의 활주는 승객들로 하여금 3차원 지도를 위아래로 뒤집은 듯한 생각을 하게 해준다.
새 출국장과 기존 터미널 사이에 있는 보안 통제 구역의 파란색 외부 클래딩은 멀리서도 눈에 잘 띈다. 이러한 파란색이 주는 테마는 내부에도 적용되어 출국 승객들은 건물 내부의 체크인 키오스크 뒤에 있는 파란색의 보안 구역을 쉽게 발견 할 수 있다. 입국 승객이 세관을 통과한 후 가장 먼저 보게 되는 것은 핀란드 특유의 자연과 일본 정원에서 볼 수 있는 나무와 돌이 있는 자유형 자연 디오라마일 것이다. 디오라마 위의 천창을 통해 출국장의 파란 하늘을 모두 볼 수 있다. 친환경 건축물 인증제도인 BREEAM의 우수한 표준 규정에 따라 공항의 확장이 이루어졌다.
