Paper and wood

Suobooks, named after Yakhyeon Jeong’s house, Suojae, is a book-making company. Books are made of paper, and paper and trees have the same genes. Therefore, the structure of this building is made of spruce, and the interior finish is made of wood of the same color and texture.

The building, built on a 1.8 meter long and inclined site, has a skip-type cross-section that adapts to the shape of the site and is cut in half, and is suitable for the use of each room. The building has a variety of floor heights. In particular, the main editing room is an area with a bookcase used as an architectural structure and a space that focuses on a sense of openness with a floor height of over 3.6 meters.
Beams, columns, and window frames were made using structure lamination wood (GLUELAM), and the roof and interlayer slabs were constructed with hand-manufactured SIP (an economical old-fashioned method to incorporate both insulation and structure at the same time by bonding structural plywood to both sides with EPS insulation material in between).

When viewed from the road, there is a small fence with a layer that allows entry and exit through the concave interspace, and internal movement is always made to circulate around the intervening space. The deep eaves with simple mass and function were unified with the gray of cement bricks, and the interior was brought together with the scent and color of wood.

Bodhi tree and wild oak

Landscaping is the final stage of architecture. In order to complete the project with a low construction cost, the architect directly participated in the design and construction. The whole idea was conceptualized as a tree with white flowers in spring and summer. It is expected that a harmonious garden of trees and grass will fill the yard abundantly year after year.

SuoBooks has numorous Christian staff, but many of the writers are monks. The Bodhi tree that appears in Budda’s training, and the wild oak tree are used to craft the knife cutting board, the Altar of Sacrifice. Since a tree made the cross of Jesus, we prayed that it would become a friendly space of mind and planted three trees each, which is a symbolic tree that achieves the unity of Christianity and Buddhism.

종이와 나무

정약현의 당호 수오재에서 이름을 따온 수오서재는 책을 만드는 회사다. 책은 종이로 만들어지며 종이와 나무는 동일한 유전자다. 하여 이 건물의 구조는 가문비나무로 지어졌으며 실내마감도 동일한 색상과 질감의 나무로 만들어졌다.

1.8m의 경사지고 기다란 대지에 지어지는 건물은 대지의 형상에 순응하여 반 층씩 물리는 스킵형 단면을 가지며 각 실별 용도에 적합하고 다양한 층고를 가진다. 특히 메인이 되는 편집실은 책장이 건축구조로 사용되며 층고가 3.6m를 넘는 개방감에 초점을 둔 공간이다.

보와 기둥 그리고 창문틀도 구조용 집성재(GLUELAM)를 사용하여 만들어졌으며, 지붕과 층간 슬라브는 SIP(EPS 단열재를 사이에 끼고 구조용 합판을 양면에 접착시킨 단열과 구조를 동시에 해결하는 경제적 구법)를 손수 제작하여 시공했다.

도로에서 보면 야트막한 담장으로 켜를 두고 오목한 사이 공간을 통해 출입하게 만들었으며 내부의 이동은 늘 사이 공간을 중심으로 순회하게 만들었다. 간결한 매스와 기능을 담은 깊은 처마는 시멘트 벽돌의 회색 느낌으로 통일했고 실내는 온통 나무의 향기와 색으로 통일시켰다.

보리수와 산딸나무

조경은 건축의 마무리 단계이다. 적은 공사비로 마무리하려고 건축가가 직접 설계와 시공에 참여했다. 봄여름에 하얀색 꽃이 피는 나무로 전체 개념을 잡았다. 나무와 지피류의 조화로운 동산이 해를 거듭하며 마당을 풍성하게 채워줄 것을 기대한다.

수오서재는 기독교인 직원이 많은데 작가 중에는 스님이 많다. 보리수는 석가모니의 수행에 나오는 나무이고 산딸나무는 희생의 제단인 칼도마를 만들거나 예수님의 십자가를 만든 나무이니, 그야말로 기독교와 불교의 합일을 이루는 상징적 나무를 세 주씩 심어 사이좋은 마음공간이 되길 기도했다.
