CAFE MANOAH, TONGYEONG

Jangmun-ri, Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do is a small village formed along the gentle topography with its back towards Sambongsan Mountain in the southeast, and front facing the sea to the northwest. The site is located at the entrance, somewhat out of the center of the village where buildings are clustered, and the view is open in all directions as there are no buildings directly facing the site. The shape of the site is spread out towards the sea in a sloping fan shape, so depending on where you are within the site, you may face a three-dimensional landscape.
Cafe Manoah captures the rich landscape created by the nature of Tongyeong through architectural structures such as windows and the gaps between walls. As if unfolding a folding screen, you encounter unintentional spaces where nature is projected on each side meeting at different angles. The external space provided between the spaces is an open space. It is also extendable to the adjacent external space, and can be used without feeling a distinction between indoors and outdoors. The arrangement of small, simple boxes that meet at different angles follows the axis of the terrain where the building is located and the axis of user experience. Visitors within the volumes segmented in this way can constantly see different scenes, with walls at different angles and floor levels at different heights. Areas are divided, but spaces are continuous. As visitors repeatedly cross the boundary in and out of the cafe, their senses such as hearing, smell, touch, temperature, as well as sight are stimulated. The structural change in which walls, floors, and ceilings open and close as a ‘sensory control device’ is not confined to the interior, but continues to the outside courtyard, roof top, and garden. The ‘outside room’ that continues outside is a space where visitors can rest comfortably while immersing themselves in the flow of nature, at least for a moment.
Tongyeong Manoa, which sits low on the ground, sensitively reacts to the topography and natural scenery, and does not boast its presence. It adapts to the surrounding buildings of Jangmun-ri and the surrounding beautiful nature, and becomes a part of the mountains that exist as a background. Between the ground and the horizontal boards squeezed in between, visitors will be able to take home the experience of becoming one with nature.

통영의 자연이 스며든 공간, 카페 마노아
경상남도 통영 장문리는 남동쪽의 삼봉산을 등지고 북서쪽으로 바다를 향하며 완만하게 지형을 따라 형성된 작은 마을이다. 대상지는 건물들이 모여 있는 마을 중심부에서 다소 벗어난 초입부에 위치하며, 땅과 직접적으로 마주하고 있는 건물이 없어 시야가 전 방향으로 트인 곳이다. 특히, 대지의 형상이 경사진 부채꼴로 바다 방향으로 펼쳐져 있어, 대지 안에서 바라보는 시선에 따라 만나게 되는 입체적 풍경을 마주할 수도 있다.
카페 마노아는 이러한 통영의 자연이 만드는 풍요로운 풍경을 건축의 벽과 벽 사이의 틈, 창과 같은 건축의 구조물을 통해 담아낸다. 병풍을 펼치듯 서로 다른 각도로 마주한 면마다 자연이 투영된 의도치 않은 공간들과 마주치게 된다. 공간들 사이사이 마련된 외부 공간은 열린 공간이다. 인접한 외부공간으로 확장되기도 하며, 사용자가 실내외 구분 없이 느끼며 사용할 수 있다. 서로 다른 각으로 만나는 간결한 작은 박스 구성의 배치는 건축물이 들어선 지형의 축과 사용자 경험의 축을 따르고 있다. 이렇게 분절된 매스들은 건물 내에서 방문자는 다양한 각도의 벽들과 다른 높이의 바닥 레벨에 의해 끊임없이 다른 장면들을 볼 수 있다.
영역은 구분되지만 공간들은 끊이지 않고 이어진다. 마노아에서 내부와 외부의 경계를 반복적으로 넘나들며 시각뿐만 아니라 청각, 후각, 촉각, 온도 등 방문자의 감각을 자극한다. ‘감각의 조절장치’로 벽, 바닥, 천장이 열리고 닫히는 구조물 변화는 실내뿐만 아니라 자연스럽게 외부의 중정, 루프탑, 정원으로도 이어진다. 밖으로 이어지는 ‘외부 방’은 방문자가 잠시나마 자연의 흐름에 몸을 맡기고, 안락하게 쉴 수 있는 공간이다.
지형과 자연 풍경에 민감하게 반응하며 낮게 땅에 안착한 통영 마노아는 존재감을 드러내지 않는다. 장문리 마을의 주변 건축물들, 그리고 주변의 아름다운 자연에 순응하며 배경으로서 존재하는 산세의 일부가 된 것이다. 땅과 그 사이를 비집고 들어간 수평의 판 사이에서 방문객들은 자연과 하나되는 경험을 가져갈 수 있을 것이다.
