건축주는 은퇴 후 살아갈 집을 원했으며, 안방을 포함해 계단 없이 1층에서 모든 주요 생활 공간에 접근 가능한 공간을 원했다. 디자인팀은 건축주가 출입구와 같은 레벨에서 공간을 사유할 수 있도록 부지의 자연 등고를 활용하는 집을 계획했다. 주층에는 거실과 안방이 자리잡고 있으며 식당, 부엌, 스위트 룸 등은 모두 개방형 평면으로 계획되었다. 모든 공간에는 천장에서 바닥까지 이어지는 창문이 있다. 또한 경사로 인해 완전히 유리로 이루어진 저층에는 2개의 객실, 욕실, 거실 및 체육공간이 있다. 집안 어디에서나 순환은 유동적이며 긴 복도를 피하여 공간이 최적화되어 있다. 내부는 물론 외부에도 목재를 사용하여 깔끔한 라인에 따뜻함을 더했다. 집안 모든 실과 욕실에서 볼 수 있는 전망도 인상적이다. 건축주는 건축가의 포트폴리오에서 볼 수 있는 전망대와 같이 매달린 거대한 돌출형 창문이 있는 집에 매료되었다.
마지막으로, 직사광선으로부터 방을 보호하기 위해 남쪽과 서쪽으로 큰 지붕 돌출부를 계획했다. 이는 동쪽으로 갈수록 좁아지며, 에너지 효율을 위한 그늘을 제공한다는 점도 돋보인다. 같은 관점에서 대형 창은 삼중창으로 계획되어 겨울에는 단열을 강화하고 여름에는 복사열을 최소화한다.
상대적으로 제한된 예산을 고려해서 레이아웃을 최적화하고 방의 크기를 제한함으로써 건축가는 자연환경에 개방된 우아하고 현대적이며 따뜻한 거주지를 설계할 수 있었다.
The owners plan to occupy the house for their retirement and wanted all their main living areas accessible on the ground floor, without stairs, including the master bedroom. Their guests and family would have the lower level to themselves.
ESPACE VITALs team imagined a house that takes advantage of the natural grade of the site which allowed the owners to occupy the same level as the entrance. This floor houses the main living areas (the living room, the dining room and the kitchen, all in an open layout) as well as the master bedroom (a generous space that also includes a walk-in closet and an in-suite bathroom). All those spaces feature floor to ceiling windows. Also fully glazed because of the slope, the lower level houses two guest rooms, a full bathroom, a living room and a gym. Everywhere in the house, circulation is fluid and space is optimized by avoiding long corridors. On the inside as well as on the outside, wood was favored to bring warmth to the clean lines. But above all, in all the rooms, even in the bathrooms, the view is breath-taking. The clients were seduced by a house featuring a huge suspended bay-window, like an observatory, seen in ESPACE VITALs portfolio.
Finally, in order to protect the rooms from direct summer sunlight, a large roof overhang was created towards the South and the West. It tapers towards the East. This simple architectural feature, giving the building its dynamic and distinctive look, also provides shade for energy efficiency. In the same perspective, the large windows include triple glazing for enhanced insulation during winter and for minimizing heat gains during summer.
In the end, considering a relatively limited budget, the optimisation of the layout and limiting the size of the rooms allowed the architects to design an elegant, contemporary and warm residence, open to the natural environment.
