First, Sejong Metropolitan Autonomous City is a newly developed city around Seoul area. We wanted to provide a place where people can escape from the cold city life to be able to reflect on themselves. We wanted to provide people the opportunity to clear out their tiring daily routine and to experience a time to face themselves through this place. The simple square metal mass exterior and site being located not too close to the living area display ‘refinement.’
Second, the whole project started from wanting to provide special time to customers. We considered that people buying coffee is like purchasing the time they spend in the café. We wanted to create an emotional connection between the people and the clearing of their mind. This connection was made possible by fog surrounding the café with fog. There is certain image that fog gives.
Fog is like a soft cocoon: like hands holding those who can savor true ‘rest’, ‘peace’, ‘tranquility’ and ‘serenity’.
We can see colors and shapes in the fog.
I am alone in the midst of fog while the world stays outside: in the fog, we stay quiet.
Haze glittering amid the air blurs the clear line and glorifies the scenery; it’s dreamy and poetic.

There are varied emotions that fog has. It blurs the clear line not only showing more simplified image of things but also helps people to focus more on their inner selves.
The surface of the wall works as a back of the chair and customers can see the courtyard is in the middle. This wall is slightly leaned backwards to help customers gaze the plants in the courtyard, the sky and the fog. Customers can face themselves while gazing this view. Different images of plants and sky as time and season change is a metaphor for cycle of life.
The rough texture and the simple shape of the building lead to ‘refinement’. There are no windows on the outside which makes it hard to figure out what’s inside. We wanted to leave the concrete as it was removed from the mold and only washed the residue of the wall to show its gravels with high-pressure water jet. The upper part of the building is finished with light-weight steel called ‘M-bar.’ The finishing materials and processes adopted were to portray simple and restrained variation.
The steel as a finishing material interrupts airwaves resulting bad cell phone connection. However, clients wanted to leave this interruption intentionally to help people focus on themselves.
When the door opens, in the middle is the courtyard. The first thing to notice is the floor but it is noticeable that this courtyard turns out to be an outdoor area with no ceiling. The diagonal line adds more focus to the center. Interior design and the finishing material are also very much clean and simple. To add coherence to the design, we have colored the wooden chair black with ink and placed similar color of stones in between the benches. The absence of plugs for charging electronic devices is also part of the design to help customers concentrate more on themselves.
We designed our own furniture that goes well with the interior, functions well but also to perform unique purpose of helping customers to immerge into themselves. The table is connected to the chair so that customers can reach out from any angle without difficulty. The flat top and the lower part of the table is colored black but the vertical stainless structure stands out and work as an objet that adds alignment in the space. On top of the stainless structure is the little note from the café to the customers.
첫째, 세종 특별자치시는 서울을 중심으로 새롭게 개발된 도시이다. 우리는 사람들이 차가운 도시 생활에서 벗어날 수 있는 공간을 제공하여 스스로를 되돌아 볼 수 있도록 하고 싶었다. 우리는 사람들에게 지친 일상을 정리하고 이곳을 통해 자신을 마주 할 시간을 경험할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 싶었다. 주거지와 너무 가깝지 않은 곳에 위치한 단순한 정사각형 금속 매스의 외관과 부지는 '개선'을 보여준다.
둘째, 전체 프로젝트는 고객에게 특별한 시간을 제공하고자 하는 것에서 시작되었다. 우리는 커피를 사는 사람들은 카페에서 그들이 보내는 시간을 사는 것과 같다고 생각했다. 우리는 사람들과 마음을 맑게 하는 것 사이에 감정적인 연결을 만들고 싶었다. 이 연결은 카페를 둘러싸는 안개에 의해 가능해졌다. 안개가 주는 확실한 이미지가 있다.
안개는 부드러운 누에 고치와 같다. 진정한 '휴식', '평화', '평정', '평온'을 맛볼 수 있는 손을 잡고있는 것과 같다.
안개 속에서 색깔과 모양을 볼 수 있다.
나는 세상이 밖에 머무르는 동안 안개 속에서 혼자있다. 안개 속에서 우리는 조용하다.
공기 중에 반짝이는 안개는 선명한 선을 흐리게 하고 풍경을 아름답게 한다. 그것은 몽환적이고 시적이다.

안개에는 다양한 감정이 있다. 사물의 단순한 이미지를 보여줄 뿐만 아니라 사람들이 내면에 더 집중할 수 있도록 명확한 선을 흐리게 만든다.
벽의 표면은 의자의 등받이 역할을 하며 손님들은 중앙에 안뜰을 볼 수 있다. 이 벽은 약간 뒤로 기울어져서 손님들이 안뜰, 하늘 및 안개 속에 있는 식물을 볼 수 있다. 손님들은 이 뷰를 바라 보면서 자신을 마주 할 수 있다. 시간과 계절의 변화에 따른 식물과 하늘의 다른 이미지는 삶의 순환에 대한 은유이다.
거친 질감과 단순한 형태의 건물이 '세련'으로 이어진다. 외부에는 창문이 없어 내부가 무엇인지 파악하기 어렵다. 우리는 콘크리트를 금형에서 제거하고 고압 워터젯으로 자갈을 보여주기 위해 벽의 잔여물만 씻어 내고 싶었다. 건물의 윗부분은 'M 바'라는 경량 철재로 마감했다. 마감재와 공정은 단순하면서도 절제된 변형을 표현하기 위해 채택했다.
마감재로 사용되는 강철은 전파를 차단하여 휴대폰 연결이 잘 되지 않는다. 그러나 건축주는 사람들이 자신에게 집중할 수 있도록 의도적으로 이러한 차단을 유지하고 싶어했다.
문이 열리면 중앙에 안뜰이 있다. 가장 먼저 눈에 띄는 것은 바닥이지만 이 안뜰은 천장이 없는 실외 공간으로 밝혀졌다. 대각선은 중앙으로 더 많은 초점을 추가한다. 인테리어 디자인과 마감재도 매우 깨끗하고 단순하다. 디자인에 일관성을 더하기 위해 나무 의자를 검정색 잉크로 채색하고 벤치 사이에 비슷한 색상의 돌을 배치했다. 전자 장치 충전용 플러그가 없는 것도 손님들이 자신에게 더 집중할 수 있도록 도와주는 설계의 일부이다.
우리는 인테리어와 잘 어울리고, 기능이 좋을 뿐만 아니라 고객이 몰입 할 수 있도록 돕는 고유한 목적을 수행하기 위해 자체 가구를 설계했다. 테이블이 의자와 연결 되어있어 고객이 어떤 각도에서든 쉽게 손을 뻗을 수 있다. 테이블의 평평한 상단과 하단은 검은색이지만 수직 스테인리스 구조가 눈에 띄고 공간에 정렬을 추가하는 오브제 역할을 한다. 스테인리스 구조 위에는 카페에서 손님들에게 보내는 작은 메모가 있다.
