THE HOUSE WITH MOUNTAIN

The site is located in the middle of a mountain in Gugi-dong, Jongno-gu. It is only when you go up to the place where large and small detached houses are concentrated until you are out of breath. The way to and from home is difficult, but it is in a position to have that much view. I fell in love with the mountain when I first met the old building, which is more than 30 years old. Mt. Bukak was seen far away, and a side of the yard seemed to be cutting down. Generally, the boundary of a house is divided into walls, where one side of the boundary was a mountain instead of a fence. The house itself was not splendid, but it was harmoniously and quietly mingled with the mountains. While remodeling, I hoped that it would be a house where I could preserve the existing house as much as possible and enjoy looking at the mountain quietly.

Ironically, the goal of the architect’s house is to minimize the behavior of the building itself. I hoped that the house would be a place where I could look at the mountain quietly without doing anything as much as possible. The exterior was cleaned as it is, and the interior was only supplemented and styled with functional parts. In the yard, there are long low stairs in front of the front door where you can look at the mountain. The central space of the yard was made into a clean paper-based space rather than any landscaping. To capture the lives of the living people and to hold the mountains. I thought it was meaningless to design a landscape in front of the mountain. A cut tree stump was also placed on one side of the yard to be used as a chair, and a bench was installed next to it to look at the house. You can sit anywhere, and it’s a natural house no matter where you look.

대지는 종로구 구기동의 산 중턱에 위치해 있다. 크고 작은 단독주택들이 밀집해 있는 곳으로 숨이 턱까지 차오를 때까지 올라가면 비로소 집에 도달한다. 집을 오가는 길은 힘이 들지만, 그만큼의 전망을 가질 수 있는 위치에 있다. 30년 이상된 구옥을 처음 만났을 때 산에 반했다. 멀리 북악산이 보이고, 마당 한 면이 깎아내리는 듯한 산이었다. 일반적으로 주택의 경계를 담장으로 구분하는데, 이 주택은 경계의 한 면이 담장 대신 산이었다. 주택 자체는 화려하지 않지만, 단아하고 조용하게 산과 어우러져 있었다. 리모델링하면서 기존의 집을 최대한 보존하고 조용히 산을 바라보고 즐길 수 있는 집이 되길 바랐다. 아이러니하게, 건축가의 집이 건축 자체의 행위를 최소화하는 것이 가장 목표가 된 셈이다. 집은 최대한 아무것도 하지 않고, 조용히 산을 바라볼 수 있는, 산이 주인공인 공간이 된다.

외관은 있는 그대로 깨끗하게 정리를 하고, 내부는 기능적인 부분의 보완 및 스타일링만 했다. 마당에 산을 바라볼 수 있는 평상, 현관 앞쪽에 낮은 긴 계단을 두어 앉을 수 있도록 했다. 마당 중앙 공간은 어떤 조경을 하기 보다 깨끗한 종이처럼 바탕이 되는 공간으로 만들었다. 사는 사람의 생활을 담고, 산을 담는다. 산 앞에서 어떤 조경을 디자인하는 것이 의미가 없다고 생각했다. 마당 한 켠에 베어진 나무 그루터기도 그대로 두어, 의자로 사용하고, 그 옆에는 집을 바라볼 수 있는 벤치를 설치했다. 어디든 앉을 수 있고, 어디를 바라보아도 자연인 집이다.
