From an Apartment to a Detached House

Currently, apartment complexes offer more than 10 million units and are occupying over 60% of housing types. While the proportion of apartment complexes, which guarantee convenience, comfort as well as security, is constantly growing, the percentage of detached houses is consistently decreasing. However, the number of young couples moving out from safe and convenient apartments and into detached houses is recently increasing. To those who pursue their family's own values and lifestyle, apartments that have a given number of rooms, fixed sizes and locations, like ready-made clothes, are emphasized as weakness rather than conveniences, and they undoubtedly needed a custom-made space for their own way of life.

From a TV-centric Space to a Book-centric Space

Living rooms in apartment complexes are often planned around the television. However, this family filled it with books. By having the kitchen and dining room use part of the living room, the whole family was spending their daily lives in a large library called a living room. The owner had a good understanding about the convenience of apartments. Consequently, they lived by changing it in one way or another to match their lifestyle while maintaining the benefits of an apartment.

From Individual Spaces to One Connected Space

In order to include the everyday lives of the whole family in one space centering around the living room, a space was formed by separating and rearranging the unique functions of the rooms. Correlated functions and actions were bundled together, and bundles that need to be separated were flexibly organized to allow optional opening and closing. All daily actions, excluding independent actions such as washing and sleeping, were planned with a circulated spatial composition of living room-dining room-kitchen-utility room-dressing room-living room. The rotating circulation that was applied to the living space will revitalize the encountering of family members and variety of relationships.

From 2 Dimensions (Area) to 3 Dimensions (Volume)

Something that can help differentiate detached houses from apartments is the floor height. Unlike apartments, where the same form and area are piled up with the same floor height, detached houses can vary the height of spaces. This is a concern on the form and volume of a space that cannot be explained only with the floor area, as well as an important method that highlights the attributes and enriches the quality of the space. Within the permissible range of the regulation that must legally be followed, the living room, which is the central space, was formed with a high floor height and a pentagonal section. A connected spatial composition that three-dimensionally embraces the kitchen, dining room and even the attic space was possible. The level of the floor surface was adjusted for the rental household on the first floor. By planning the floor of the kitchen and small rooms more than 1m lower using the topography with the height difference, a floor height that is 1.5 times higher than that of ordinary multi-unit dwellings, was able to be secured. As much as the floor heigh was heightened, the location of the window that adjoins the road was elevated, allowing lighting as well as privacy to be secured by blocking the gazes from outside. Furthermore, by inserting a small space to the upper part of the bathroom and storage closet, a three-dimensional space was formed and additional functions were included.
