It’s an alley that appears first if you walk slightly further to the south from a performance stage at Gimgwangseok-gil, Jung-gu in Daegu. As I was commissioned to lead an architectural project for the second lot on this alley, I visited the site for a field study in May of 2018. There was an hanok which was once used as an official residence for vice mayors of Daegu. 

The client’s initial idea was to remodel it into a hanok-style cafe. But then one day, the client sent a message that he wants to demolish the exiting building to replace it with a new one. Therefore, I started studying the relationship between the project site and its neighboring streets.

Then I noticed that there exist wedding and trousseau business streets in the neighborhood, and thought that it would be better to take the relationship between Gimgwangseok-gil and other adjacent streets as a main theme. Inspired from these clues, I thought of Korean traditional patchworks as a design concept and decided to apply them to the design actively.

Firstly, the new building is set well back from the road. The building mass is designed to resemble a patchwork. To keep consistency in the patchwork pattern, the number of openings on the walls is reduced to a minimum. White is used as the main wall color to make harmony with the adjacent streets.

I hope this space can make people feel as if they have received an unexpected present while walking down an alley. I hope it appears as a subtle and humble space. And I hope it becomes a good memorable place forming part of good memories of this alley.

대봉동 31-62 근린생활시설

대구광역시 중구 김광석길 공연장에서 남쪽으로 내려오면 만나는 첫 번째 골목길이 있다. 그 골목길 두 번째 부지에 건축 의뢰를 받고, 2018년 5월 현장 조사를 하러 갔었다. 그곳엔, 옛 대구 부시장 관사로 사용되었던 한옥이 자리하고 있었다. 처음 건축주의 생각은 기존 한옥을 리모델링하여 한옥 카페를 하는 것이었다.

어느 날, 건축주는 기존 건물을 철거하고 새롭게 건물을 짓겠다는 의견을 전해왔다. 기존 부지와 주변 가로의 연계성을 고민하다가 주변에 웨딩 업체 거리와 혼수 거리가 있고, 주변 가로와 김광석길과의 연계성을 주된 의미로 접근하는 것이 좋겠다는 생각을 하였다. 이 단서를 통해 디자인 콘셉트로 우리나라의 전통공예인 조각보를 떠올렸고, 이것을 적극적으로 활용하였다.

우선, 부지에서 건물은 도로로부터 거리적 여유를 가지고 물러나게 배치하였고, 건물의 매스 디자인은 조각보를 연상시킬 수 있게 정리했다. 조각보의 패턴을 유지하기 위해 벽면에 최소한의 창을 고려하였다. 벽체의 주조색은 백색으로 정리하여, 주변의 가로와 조화를 유도하려 노력하였다. 골목길을 걷다 건물을 발견하였을 때, 생각하지못한 선물을 받은 느낌이 드는 공간이 되길 바란다. 은은하고 수수한 느낌의 공간이 되기를. 그 거리의 좋은 추억과 함께 좋은 기억의 공간이 되기를.
