Children have a different scale perception than adults. At a young age, everything looks larger in size than when we see it as adults. The project focuses on the idea of scaling down the perception of the building so that the future young users can relate more to it. In order to achieve this goal the massing of the building is divided into five smaller volumes.
Each of them has a distinctive color, geometry and finishing material to emphasize the smaller ones among the overall mass. Windows also contribute to the overall idea of scale perception. They are designed in various sizes and heights so that all users –children from one to five years and adults- can have direct views to the exterior. No matter what the height of the user will be, there will be always a window that adjusts to it.
The building is located in the junction between two roads. The main entrance of the building opens towards the wider road consequently the entrance is designed so that children cannot have a direct exit to the road but rather through a transition space. This space serves as a safety area but also as a playground and as a buffer zone between classes and the traffic’s noise coming from the main road. For safety reasons, the parking area is located on the opposite side from the main entrance with access for vehicles from the secondary road.
The building is organized around a central stair painted in blue color with a large skylight on the roof that allows natural light access to the heart of the building. Classrooms open towards this space Classrooms are orientated to south and east while the serving programs such as kitchen, storages, elevator, and bathrooms are orientated towards the north.
A greenhouse is located on the third floor that not only acts as part of the educational program but also as a heating system during the cold days of the winter. The warm air accumulated during the day is released later in the evening to the inner spaces contributing to the overall air treatment of the building.
매봉 데이케어 센터
아이들은 어른들과 다른 규모 인식을 가지고 있다. 어린 나이에는 어른들이 보는 것보다 모든 것이 크게 보인다. 이 프로젝트는 건물 크기의 인식을 작게 하여 미래의 어린 사용자가 건물과 더 많이 관련될 수 있게 하는 것에 중점을 두었다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위해, 건물의 매스를 5개의 작은 볼륨으로 나눴다. 각각의 볼륨은 고유의 색깔, 기하학, 마감재를 사용하여 전체 매스 중에서 각각의 작은 볼륨을 강조할 수 있게 하였다. 창문은 규모 인식의 전반적인 아이디어에도 기여한다. 1~5세 아이들과 어른들은 다양한 크기와 높이로 설계된 창문을 통해 직접 외부를 볼 수 있다. 사용자의 신장과 상관없이 높이가 항상 조정된 창문이 있게 되는 셈이다.
이 건물은 두 개의 도로 사이 교차로에 위치해 있다. 주 출입구는 더 넓은 도로 쪽으로 열려 있어, 결과적으로 어린이들이 도로로 직접 나갈 수 없고 전환 공간을 통과하도록 설계되어 있다. 이 공간은 안전 지역일 뿐 아니라 놀이터이자 주요 도로에서 오는 교통 소음의 완충 공간으로 사용된다. 안전상의 이유로, 주차 공간은 차량 접근이 가능한 주 입구와 보조 도로의 반대쪽에 위치해 있다. 이 건물은 푸른색으로 칠해진 중앙 계단 주위로 구성되어 있으며 건물 중앙부에 자연광이 들어오게 하는 지붕이 있다. 이 공간을 향해 교실은 열려 있다. 교실은 남동향이며, 반면에 부엌, 창고, 엘리베이터, 욕실은 북향이다. 3층에 위치한 그린하우스는 교육 프로그램의 일환일 뿐 아니라 추운 겨울에 난방 시스템으로도 쓰인다. 낮에 축적된 따뜻한 공기는 건물 전체 공기 관리에 기여하며 저녁에 내부 공간에서 방출된다.
