Maggie’s Centre Barts

The site in the center of London is adjacent to the large courtyard of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Founded in Smithfield in the 12th century, the hospital is the oldest in London and was founded at the same time as the St. Bartholomew the Great Church in 1123.

Rahere founded the church and hospital “for the restoration of poor men.” Layers of history characterize this unique site, connecting deeply to the Medieval culture of London. While most all of the realized Maggie’s Centres have been horizontal buildings, the centre at St. Barts will be more vertical, sitting on the historically charged site.

It will replace a pragmatic 1960s brick structure adjacent to a 17th century stone structure by James Gibbs, holding the “Great Hall” and the famous Hogarth staircase. The building is envisioned as a “vessel within a vessel within a vessel.” The structure is a branching concrete frame, the inner layer is bamboo and the outer layer is matte white glass with colored glass fragments recalling “neume notation” of Medieval music of the 13th century.

The word neume originates from the Greek pnevma, which means ‘vital force.’ It suggests a ‘breath of life’ that fills oneself with inspiration like a stream of air, the blowing of the wind. The outer glass layer is organized in horizontal bands like a musical staff while the concrete structure branches like the hand. The three story centre has an open curved staircase integral to the concrete frame with open spaces vertically lined in bamboo.

The glass facade geometry, like a musical “staff” is in horizontal strips 90cm wide, which follow the geometry of the main stair along the north facade, while lifting up with clear glass facing the main square, marking the main front entry. There is a second entry on the west opening to the extended garden of the adjacent church.

The building tops out in a public roof garden open to a large room for yoga, Tai Chi, meetings etc. The interior character of this building will be shaped by colored light washing the floors and walls, changing by the time of day and season. Interior lighting will be organized to allow the colored lenses together with the translucent white glass of the facade to present a new, joyful, glowing presence on this corner of the great square of St. Barts Hospital.

메기스 센터 바츠

런던 중심에 위치한 이 부지는 성 바르톨로메오 병원의 큰 중정에 인접해 있다. 12세기 스미스 필드에 설립된 이 병원은 런던에서 가장 오래된 병원으로, 1123년 성 바르톨로메오 대교회와 동시에 설립되었다. Rahere는 “가난한 사람들의 회복”을 위해 교회와 병원을 설립하였다. 이러한 역사는 런던의 중세 문화에 깊이 연관되어 이 곳을 특별하게 만든다.

현실화된 메기 센터는 수평적 건물인 반면, 역사적으로 유적지에 위치한 St. Barts의 센터는 비교적 더 수직적이다. 이것은 “Great Hall”과 유명한 호가스(Hogarth) 계단을 보유하고 있는 제임스 깁스(James Gibbs)에 의해 17세기 석조 구조물에 인접한 실용적인 1960년대의 벽돌 구조를 대체할 것이다. 이 건물은 “배 안의 배 안의 배”로 구성되었다. 구조는 분절된 콘크리트 프레임으로 구성되어 있으며, 내부는 대나무로, 외부는 13세기 중세 음악의 “네우마 표기법”을 떠올리게 하는 무광의 흰색 유리와 유색 유리 조각으로 이루어져 있다.“ neume”라는 단어는 그리스어 “pnevma”에서 유래했으며, 생명력을 의미한다.

그것은 바람이 불어오는 것에서 영감을 받아 자신을 채우는 “삶의 호흡”을 제안한다. 외부 유리층은 악보의 오선처럼 수평적 밴드로 구성되어 있으나 콘크리트 구조는 손처럼 나뉘어져 있다. 3층으로 된 센터는 콘크리트 프레임에 일체형으로 개방된 곡선 형태의 계단이 있으며, 대나무가 일렬로 세워져 있는 개방형 공간으로 되어 있다. 악보의 오선과 같은 유리 외관 형태는 90cm 너비의 수평 스트립으로 북쪽 외관을 따라 주 계단의 기하학적 형태를 따르는 반면, 주요 광장 쪽으로 향한 투명 유리를 들어 올려 메인 정문을 표시한다.

교회와 가까운 넓은 정원으로 향해 있는 왼쪽에는 다른 입구가 있다. 건물 위의 공공 옥상정원에서는 요가, 태극권, 회의 등을 위한 곳으로 개방되어 있다. 이 건물의 내부 특성은 바닥과 벽에 비쳐진 빛과 계절과 시간에 따라 변화는 색상의 빛에 의해 만들어진다. 내부 조명은 입면의 반투명한 하얀 유리와 함께 컬러 렌즈로 하여금 성 바츠(St. Barts) 병원의 큰 광장의 코너에서 새롭고, 즐겁고, 빛나는 존재를 제시할 수 있도록 구성될 것이다.
