A house for the client and his mother, the client wished for a special building, different from a typical house. The two houses are located on a slope with a view of the sea south of Seogwipo, Jeju Island. Located in the southernmost part of Korea, the name ‘Hanhwon’ means ‘the first house to welcome the season’, and it holds the desire to be the first to be reached by warm winds. The site is bordering to the alleyway towards Seogeondo and Olle Trail Route 7, and to the south beyond the greenhouse of mandarins is a view of the ocean. There is a palm grove to the west, and to the north are a pension and some houses. Our aim was to smoothly accept and blend in with these special surroundings.

Also, we put much thought into how to infuse it with the natural and relaxing sentiment of Jeju, hich differentiates it from the city. First, as there is a vinyl greenhouse on the bordering land to the south of the slope, we boldly created a fill to be the site of the house and yard, to create a pleasant view. In the southern part of the site, which was not filled, is a space for gardening connected by an outdoor stairway. The front and back of the horizontal house facing the road was designed in a simple form for privacy. On the other hand, we boldly put the kitchen and living room on the second floor so that they would have a view of the sea.

On the first floor are a bedroom, study, bathroom and a laundry room, and these rooms are closely connected with the outdoor space through a deck. The wall between the living room and the bathroom on the second floor was planned as a storage space; the bathroom door is tucked away, and the staircase-bathroom-master bedroom-living room-staircase circulation is planned in a convenient loop. Here, the landscape of the sea through the horizontal window is framed like a picture, making it possible for each space to have its own sense of area. The vertical house was designed to be an elongated plan along the site adjacent to the palm grove. It suppresses the scenery that people may expect while entering the building, so that they get a clear view of the grove once inside the building. This was to maximize the effect of the building taking in the forest. Upon entering the front door, one comes face to face with the palm grove beyond the glass.

On the long side is a window framing the forest of palm trees; to the south, perpendicular to that, a view of the sea and sky are captured by an open space and a window. A courtyard and porch create a private garden space, which blocks the view from the outside into the master bedroom. The garden can also be viewed from the bathroom. The living room roof structure on the second floor is somewhat unusual, and we had had to solve structural problems to create a vertically open space. In the double ceiling created in the process of solving the structural problems, we installed a skylight and indirect lighting. This created a threedimensional space where light is received from different angles along with the passing of time. Considering the sea breeze of Jeju Island, charcoal siding and old bricks were used for the exterior material, which minimizes deformation and discoloration. The facade was simplified to make it harmonious with the surrounding natural environment.
