KAMPUS is a new neighbourhood located at the former Manchester Metropolitan University campus in the heart of the city. Utilising the qualities of the existing built structures - Victorian brick canal-side warehouses and the 1964 concrete tower - presents the opportunity to develop at the city block scale, creating new connections and a new destination. A melting pot of buildings and spaces, KAMPUS will celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of the city with respect to the historic quality of Canal Street.
Pixels and Dutch houses
The architecture expresses the individual building blocks with variations in height to make each facade legible. The alternating positions of accentuated apertures in the facade work to reduce the scale of the brick mass while the light pixel elements add relief and balance to the facades. The buildings are horizontally divided into three distinct elements: a podium with dark profiled metal cladding, a mid-section with rough textured red brickwork, and a roofscape characterised by Dutch houses also clad in profiled metal.
Secret garden
The podium anchors the new build and tower elements in a consistent base while creating a defined edge to the street. A transparent plinth will provide views into a variety of independent bars, cafes, shops and restaurants that will breathe life into the scheme and create a unique sense of place. The newly landscaped entrances provide access to KAMPUS and the interesting spaces between the buildings will draw people into the heart of the scheme; a unique ‘secret garden’ that forms the perfect backdrop for afternoon and early evening social events.
세 가지의 질감과 색으로 구분되는 아파트, 캠퍼스 공동주택
옛 빅토리아 시대의 벽돌 운하 창고 등 건축물들이 하나로 엮어져 도시를 위한 새 공동주거지가 됐다. 이 일대의 붉은 벽돌 건물들과 1964년에 지어진 콘크리트 타워는 도시를 블록 규모로 개발하여 새로운 연결을 만드는 도시의 중심지가 된다. 캠퍼스(KAMPUS) 공동주택은 이렇게 도시의 중심부에 위치한 구 구조물을 활용하여 만들어졌다. 옛 맨체스터대학교 캠퍼스에 자리를 잡은 몇 개의 건축물은 커널로(Canal Street)의 역사를 간직하고 새 시대에 맞는 도시의 활기, 다양성을 불러온다. 각각의 건물들은 원래 가지고 있던 파사드를 읽어낼 수 있도록 유지됐으며, 한 채 마다 각각 다른 높이로 구성되어 도시의 일상적인 모습을 비춰낸다.
외관은 크게 세 부분으로 나뉘는 것이 특징인데, 어두운 색의 금속으로 마감된 하단(기단부), 거친 질감의 붉은 벽돌로 된 중간 부분, 금속으로 덮인 삼각형의 네덜란드 주택처럼 보이는 금속 지붕 부분으로 구분된다. 특히, 파사드에 강조된 개구부들은 가벼우면서도 심플하게 도시의 풍경에 새로움을 더하는 요소들이다. 거리와 접하는 부분들은 거리에 열려있으며, 독립된 바, 카페, 상점, 레스토랑이 있어 생기를 불어넣고 독특한 장소 감각을 조성한다. 새롭게 조경된 입구는 캠퍼스로의 접근을 제공하고 건물 사이의 흥미로운 공간은 사람들을 이 계획의 중심으로 끌어들일 것이다. 독특한 '비밀 정원'은 오후와 저녁에 사교적인 모임을 할 수 있는 장소도 있다.
