Cloud House is a multi-unit dwelling built for the client to live with their children who have moved out. In the new multi-unit dwelling, the families that have now grown more gather and live together again. The site is located at the corner between a one-way street and a dead-end alley in the side street of downtown Sinsa Station in Gangnam. Every building that adjoins that road was newly constructed within the last ten years, and it is an ordinary urban alley as there are multi-unit studio apartments, offices, convenience stores, restaurants and cafes. The joint front door of the building’s main entrance is recognized from the street, allowing direct entry. The entrance has to be bright, and it is made so that it isn’t blocked by a car and the appearance of entering the front door is visible from the road. In multi-unit dwellings, pilotis spaces and parking lots are both used as if they share the same name. Pilotis, which Le Corbusier proposed in his urban planning, was a “liberation from the ground” and was a concept of not placing the space for residence on the ground but devoting it to the passage of the city. However, the typicality of pilotis, which have become parking lots, best show the internal contradictions in multi-unit and multi-household dwellings in Korea. This typicality of pilotis is made into an arcade for passage, which is at least a little bit closer to its original meaning, and a design that is not dark, not deep and not typical is created.

 

With common spaces of a building of this size, the elevator, stairs and corridor should be exposed at a glance. Spaces where the corridor is bent or darkened was avoided, and a warm-textured pea gravel resin packing was applied. The exterior staircase serves as a staircase that connects the families on the fourth and fifth floors. It avoids the northern sunlight right and connects the terrace, which resembles a courtyard, on the mother’s household on the fourth floor to the fifth floor from the outside. The basic principle of the small rental households called studios is that the spaces must be separated even if a corridor is created, and the lighting of the living room and room are arranged first. Furthermore, a boiler room and laundry room should also be made and separated.

구름집은 건축주가 분가했던 자식들과 함께 살기 위해 세워진 공동주택이다. 새로운 공동주택에서 이제는 더 늘어난 가족들이 공동으로 다시 모여 살아간다. 대지는 강남 신사역 번화가의 이면도로에 일방통행로와 막다른 골목 사이 모퉁이에 위치한다. 그 길에 접하는 모든 건물은 최근 10년 안에 신축됐으며 다가구 원룸에서부터 사무소, 편의점, 식당, 카페 등 평범한 도시의 골목이다. 건물의 주 출입구 공동 현관은 길에서 인지되며, 바로 진입이 가능하게 만든다. 입구는 밝아야 하고, 차로 인해 입구가 막히지 않고 길에서 현관 출입하는 모습이 보이게 한다. 공동주택에서 필로티(Pilotis) 공간과 주차장은 서로 같은 이름처럼 사용된다. 르 코르뷔제가 도시계획에서 제안했던 필로티는 “지면에서의 해방”으로, 거주를 위한 공간은 지면 위에 자리 잡지 않고 도시의 통행에 할애하는 개념이었다. 하지만 주차장이 되어버린 필로티의 전형성은 우리나라 다세대, 다가구에서 내부적 모순을 가장 잘 드러낸다. 그런 필로티의 전형성을 조금이라도 원래 의미에 가까운 통행을 위한 회랑(Acade)으로 어둡지 않게, 깊숙하지 않게, 전형적이지 않은 디자인을 만들어낸다.
이 규모 건물의 공용공간은 엘리베이터와 계단, 복도가 한눈에 노출되어야 한다. 복도가 꺾이거나 어두워지는 공간을 피하고, 따뜻한 질감의 콩자갈 수지포장을 적용했다. 외부계단은 4층의 식구와 5층의 식구를 연결하는 계단으로 작용한다. 정북일조권을 피하면서 4층 어머니 세대의 마당 같은 테라스와 5층을 외부에서도 연결된다. 원룸이라 불리는 작은 임대주택의 기본원칙은 복도가 생기더라도 공간이 분리되어야 하며, 거실과 방의 채광을 우선으로 배치한다. 그리고 보일러실과 세탁실을 따로 만들어 분리시키는 것을 원칙으로 한다.
