This project was planned as a second house for a family and the members of the family’s company.

TOPOLOGY
The high and spacious site, the visual axis facing the river, and the securing of sunlight served as the main geographical criteria for the architectural design. Each space attracts various levels and angles of land and river scenery, and skylights and clerestories were placed all around the building to overcome the limitations of the site with different visual and solar axes and enjoy the rich benefits of light all throughout the whole day. Since the main landscape of the site is the north where the river is located, there were parts that are incompatible with sunlight, so we put a lot of thought into building a space that accepts two great conflicting conditions into the site. In addition, we paid the utmost attention to establish a quiet location with the wide horizontal surrounding land composed of paddy fields and adjusted the form of the building in a frugal manner. As if it had been there for a long time.

TYPOLOGY
The theme was to provide a space where the three-generation family members, and sometimes the families of company members, can leave the city on the weekend to experience nature and enjoy the leisure of life. Therefore, the second-floor mass consists of four rooms with bathrooms in each room, and the first-floor mass consists of a shared living room and kitchen. External spaces such as a front yard, backyard, and terraces on the second floor were provided to allow various outdoor activities. It was designed as a cube, which is an essential form of architecture, reflecting the client’s outlook on life of wanting to leave the city and lead a life like a hermit in nature. Furthermore, the scenery of the river was restrained from the circulation of ascending the hill and parking, entering the site through the stairs, and arriving at the front entrance, and the space was formed so that the horizon of the river unfolds only when approaching the living room and each space. Just as Le Corbusier limited the landscape to embrace the landscape of the river in his ‘La Petite Maison’. The landscape was designed with restraint to deeply embrace the original landscape. By closing the landscape from the circulation and allowing the benefit of light (stair skylight, etc.) to be enjoyed, and by opening the landscape in the space of the settlement, we tried to create a rhythm to make an impression even though it is a small space.

Moreover, in the design process, the image of a ship as a metaphor came to mind. The view from each space of the building is similar to looking at the river from the deck or bridge of a ship. The users will be able to experience the feeling of sailing on a calm sea at sunset on a ship. I look forward to the rainy season when the flood elevation of the Namhan River rises.

TECTONICS
Just as the reason that the roof tiles of Korean hanoks are black is to allow it to be humbly settled in nature, we designed this house with the intention that maintaining the achromatic and geometric purity in architecture is an attitude of humility for nature, which shows diverse and rich appearances in the four seasons. Rectangular bricks and stone were used as the main material, and metal was minimized. All windowsills and lintels were built with stone, and we made a lot of effort to match the division, joints, and extensions of materials. The landscaping, interior, as well as overall furniture were all designed and produced by LKSA, in collaboration with the client.
We hope that this architecture will gradually be colored and become a part of the local landscape, and that the long memories of happiness of the members of a family and company will be densely permeated.

TOPOLOGY

TYPOLOGY

TECTONICS
