The gym is located in Dubai Design District (d3); home to the region’s most growing and vibrant design community. The client’s program included a gym floor, juice bar, cycling studio and circuit training factory all in a limited space of 600 sq m. Working with an irregular plan of 3 separate retail spaces, VSHD Design inserted a semitransparent cube in the center of the space to host the different functions. The architects' main challenge was to deliver a boutique fitness facility that is inviting, inspiring, authentic, functional and in context with a leading destination for design, art, and culture.
Inspired by brutalism in architecture and underground fight clubs, VSHD was determined to refrain from using the usual materials found in most health clubs. The architects used materials—not in the lexicon of modern—like concrete bricks combined with gold-copper alloy to make it look current, while at the same time creating modes that are elegant, warm and muscular. Specifically customized LED suspended light used to conceal all the ceiling services while maintaining an overall vibrant lighting mood that can be controlled by the different exercise zones.
What’s unique about it.
As the Warehouse Gym in D3 is located at the main entrance of the district with views from two main streets, it was essential that the design would capitalize on the view from the street to attract new members from the design-savvy community.
The reception/juice bar was designed as a communal space with a 17-meter-long glass façade on the main street creating a meeting point for the design community where they can meet after their daily workout or for non-members to stop by and grab a healthy smoothie or salad while experiencing the ambience of the gym.
While the gym space was originally made up of three separate retail outlets which would have been rented out to 3 different commercial functions, we had to make sure that those spaces flow seamlessly in a very functional manner whereas every type of exercise has its own unique space while they are all still open onto one another to ensure that the different users enjoy the gym’s dynamism and vibrancy. The semi-transparent cube in the center of the space can be combined with the gym floor to provide a large studio accommodating a larger number of users depending on the needs of any given day.
Materials used in the main gym floor and studios like the locally cured concrete bricks, gold-copper alloy and concrete flooring are very resilient to heavy use and develop an appealing patina that gives an authentic feel. Suspended Cycling podium transfers the energy from the studio into the gym floor.
체육관은 두바이 디자인 지구(d3)에 있다. 이 지역에서 가장 성장하고 활기찬 디자인 커뮤니티 지역이다. 건축주의 요구사항에는 600㎡의 제한된 공간에 체육관, 주스 바, 사이클링 스튜디오 및 서킷 트레이닝 공장을 디자인하는 것이었다. VSHD Design은 3개의 개별 소매 공간의 불규칙한 계획을 사용하여 공간 중앙에 반투명 큐브를 삽입하여 다양한 기능을 제공한다. 건축가의 주요 과제는 디자인, 예술 및 문화를 위한 주요 목적과 맥락을 같이하고, 영감을 주고, 진정하며, 기능적인 부티크 피트니스 시설을 제공하는 것이었다.
건축물과 지하 격투 클럽의 잔인함에서 영감을 받아 건축가는 대부분의 헬스 클럽에서 볼 수 있는 일반적인 재료를 사용하지 않기로 결정했다. 건축가는 금-구리 합금과 결합된 콘크리트 벽돌과 같은 재료를 사용하여 현대적인 느낌을 주는 동시에 우아하고 따뜻하며 근육질의 모드를 만들었다. 특별히 맞춤 제작한 LED 조명은 다른 운동 구역에서 제어할 수 있는 전체적으로 선명한 조명 분위기를 유지하면서 천장을 감추는 데 사용된다.
독특한 점
D3의 Warehouse Gym은 두 개의 주요 거리에서 조망할 수 있는 구역의 정문에 위치하므로 디자인에 정통한 커뮤니티의 새로운 구성원을 유치하기 위해 거리에서 보이는 전망을 활용하는 것이 필수적이었다.
리셉션, 주스 바는 메인 스트리트에 17m 길이의 유리 파사드가 있는 공동 공간으로 설계되어 매일 운동 후 만나거나 체육관의 분위기를 느끼면서 건강한 스무디나 샐러드를 먹을 수 있는 디자인 커뮤니티를 위한 만남의 장소를 제공한다.
체육관 공간은 원래 3개의 다른 상업 기능으로 임대된 3개의 별도 소매점으로 구성되어 있었지만, 그 공간이 매우 기능적인 방식으로 원활하게 흐르도록 해야 했습니다. 다른 사용자가 체육관의 역동성과 활기를 즐길 수 있도록 모두 여전히 서로에게 열려 있다. 공간 중앙의 반투명 큐브는 체육관 바닥과 결합되어 주어진 날의 요구에 따라 더 많은 사용자를 수용할 수 있는 대형 스튜디오를 제공할 수 있다.
현지에서 경화된 콘크리트 벽돌, 금-구리 합금 및 콘크리트 바닥과 같은 주요 체육관 바닥과 스튜디오에 사용된 재료는 많은 사용에 매우 탄력적이며 진정한 느낌을 주는 매력적인 녹청을 만들어낸다. Suspended Cycling 연단은 스튜디오에서 체육관 바닥으로 에너지를 전달한다.
