Jujin-dong was called Ari or Jujin from the past. it’s a farming village where mountain is on the back and a river on the front, and most of the residents are engaged in rice farming(agriculture). The name has changed into Woosisangook in three Han dynasty, Woopoonghyun in Shilla dynasty, and Heungyeobu Ulsan-gun in Korea dynasty. It was called Ulsan-gun Seomyun in Chosun dynasty, Ulsan-gun Woonsang-myeon Deokgye-ri in 1896, Yangsan-gun Woonsang-myeon in 1906, and Jujin-ri in 1914. A historically fertile land made Jujin-dong’s life and culture abundant. Greeting a change of the era, even Jujin-dong’s past is being disappeared, but we’re trying to agonize present life and memory, and the new culture coming.

The space and architecture exist by time and environment, and people who are using and thinking. Also, in amid of this change, planning and conveying new and various form’s experience which is required for humans continuously, is a role of space and architecture. A land which has kept Jujin-dong, rice, immortal wind, water, sunlight and people.

These things are the past, present, and future of Jujin-dong. Arijujin immortally reflects this abundant Jujin-dong’s appearance, and the building itself reacts to the time, seasons, and weather and shows the memory and novelty. People talk and dream more about precious and happy future in this space.

Arijujin has designed with mesenteric structure and a main building covered with aluminum panels configurate 2,780 rice and a pavilion where Jujin-dong’s rich nature could be felt closely. The main building has completed with mesenteric structure specialized in earthquake resistant design by processing Japanese cedar, and with a special exterior building material which embodies rice field. By inventing a sensitive type 3D panel, which changes rice shaped panels’ color and patterns according to the outdoor environment which consistently changes through four seasons, it has applied to the building’s exterior finishing material. In addition to it, the pavilion has finished with mirror stainless steel so it designed a structure floating lightly between land and sky, and mirror-like structure reflecting the changing land and sky.

We planned a space which contains and reflects the continuously changing appearance of sky and land and people’s various moments together so the nature could be enjoyed nearby to the utmost. Through various agonies, and tries like Arijujin, we expect an architecture to become an immortal architectural space which records and memorizes history and culture of the space and shows new experience.

주진동은 예로부터 아리 또는 주진이라 했다. 배산임수형의 농촌 마을로, 동쪽 지역의 평지에서 주민 대부분이 쌀 농사(농업)에 종사하고 있다. 삼한시대 우시산국(于尸山國), 신라시대 우풍현(處風縣), 고려시대 흥여부(興麗府) 울산군(蔚山郡)으로 개칭, 조선시대 울산군 서면, 1896년 울산군 웅상면 덕계리, 1906년 양산군 웅상면, 1914년 주진리라 했다. 역사적으로 비옥하던 땅은 주진동의 삶과 문화를 풍요롭게 만들어주었다. 시대의 변화를 맞이하며 비록 주진동의 과거는 사라져가고 있지만 현재의 삶과 기억, 그리고 앞으로의 새로운 문화를 고민해본다.

공간과 건축은 항상 변하는 시간과 환경, 그리고 사용하고 생각하는 사람에 의해서 존재한다. 또한, 이러한 변화 속에 인간에게 지속적으로 필요한 새롭고 다양한 형태의 경험을 계획하고 전달하는 것이 공간이며 건축의 역할이다. 주진동을 지켜온 땅과 벼, 영속적인 바람, 물, 햇빛, 그리고 사람들, 이 모든 것이 주진동의 과거이자 현재 그리고 미래다. 아리주진은 이 풍요로운 주진동의 모습을 영속적으로 비춰주며 건축 그 자체가 시간과 계절, 그리고 날씨에 반응하며 그 기억과 새로움을 보여준다. 사람들은 이 공간에서 더욱 소중하고 즐거운 미래를 이야기하고 꿈꾼다.

아리주진은 중목구조와 2,780개의 벼를 형상화한 알루미늄 패널로 덮인 본채와 주진동의 풍부한 자연을 가까이서 느낄 수 있는 파빌리온이 됐다. 가공된 삼나무로 내진설계에 특화된 중목 구조와 벼 밭을 형상화한 특별한 건축 외장재로 완성됐다. 사계절을 거치며 지속적으로 변하는 외부 환경의 모습에 따라 쌀 모양 패널의 색과 패턴이 바뀌는 감응형 입체 패널을 개발하여 건축물 외부 마감재로 적용했다. 또한, 파빌리온은 미러 스테인리스로 마감하여 마치 하늘과 땅 사이에 가볍게 떠 있으면서 변화하는 땅과 하늘의 모습을 비춰주는 거울과 같은 구조물을 설계했다. 끊임없이 변화하는 하늘과 땅의 모습과 사람들의 다양한 모습을 함께 담고 비춰주며 자연을 가장 가까이서 즐길 수 있는 공간인 것이다. 아리주진과 같은 다양한 고민, 시도를 통해 건축이 그 공간의 역사와 문화를 기록하고 기억하며 새로운 경험을 보여주는 영속적인 건축 공간이 될 수 있기를 기대해본다.
