"It's a small building, but I want it to seem big."

The client assigned us with a task. In order to meet the client's demands, several device solutions were applied to the design of Gallery Pakyoung. First, memories were embodied and the experiencing circulation of the gallery was separated. By juxtaposing different spaces on each articulation of the divided masses, various spaces were produced, and the architectural issue of 'formation', which can be seen as somewhat retro, was emphasized. We set up devices that change each chapter on a sequence that expresses memories as metaphors, such as the small hill, open yard, sky path, the water elements and expression of flow, as well as the outdoor stage space.

The traces of the water path that flows around the outside of the site juxtaposed with the flow of the Han River, reflected the duality of the 'flow' through the small water space (pond) at the entrance of the building as well as the pond that alternates with the west through the building's internal flooring material made of glass blocks. The weight that is felt from the exposed concrete verifies the various plasticities of the cast concrete mass with the slope treatment of the external staircase and sky path as divisions of the mass and linear elements, the use of acute angels for the western balcony, etc., and structural glass surfaces, zinc, corrosion steel panels and wood were utilized by using restrained members. The client positively responded to the use of primary colors for the circular mass, due to the fact that a narrow and long site that is hidden in the side street was used. In particular, the round glass to the east of the main exposed concrete mass has a diamond-like symbol that contrasts with the west art gallery, and for the curved curtain walls, the transparency of the water element of the pond contrasts with the protruding piloti corrosion steel panel mass.

This gallery is the result of leaving traces of the architecture's memories and codes through architectural formative devices created with experience.

갤러리박영

“작은 건물이지만 크게 느껴졌으면 좋겠어요”

클라이언트는 과제를 던저줬다. 갤러리박영은 이러한 요구에 맞게끔 설계에 몇가지 장치적 해법이 사용됐다. 먼저, 기억을 형상화했으며, 갤러리의 체험 동선을 분절했다. 분절된 매스의 결절마다 다른 공간을 병치시키면서 다양한 공간을 연출했고, 다소 복고적이게 느껴질 수 있는 ‘조형성’의 건축 이슈를 부각했다. 기억을 은유로 표현하는 작은 언덕과 열린 마당, 하늘길, 물의 요소와 흐름의 표현, 야외무대 공간 등 시퀀스 선상에 각 챕터가 바뀌는 장치를 설정했다.

한강의 흐름에 병치된 대지를 밖으로 감싸며 흐르는 물길의 흔적은 건물 진입부 작은 수공간(연못)과 서측과 교호하는 연못을 건축물 내부 유리 블럭으로 만들어진 바닥재를 통해 ‘흐름’의 중첩성을 반영했다. 노출콘크리트에서 느껴지는 무게감은 매스의 분절과 선적 요소로서 옥외 계단부 및 하늘길의 경사처리, 서측 발코니의 예각 사용 등, 주조 콘크리트 매스의 다양한 가소성을 확인하며, 절제된 부재 활용으로 구조적 유리면, 징크, 부식강판재, 목재를 사용했다. 이면도로의 감추어진 좁고 긴 대지의 활용상 원형 매스의 원색 사용에 건축주는 적극 호응했다. 특히, 주 매스인 노출콘크리트의 동측면 사면 유리는 다이아몬드와 같은 상징과 서측 아트 갤러리, 곡면 커튼월은 투명성의 물의 요소인 연못과 필로티로 만들어진 부식강판 돌출 매스와 대비된다.

이 갤러리는 체험으로 만들어지는, 건축적 조형 장치를 통해 건축의 기억, 코드의 흔적을 남긴 결과이다.
