The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Washington State University brings art to the forefront of university life – and the entire Inland Northwest region. As the only dedicated fine art museum in a 230-mile radius, Design Principal Jim Olson sought to create a building with bold visual appeal that would engage and inspire. The resulting reflective façade, crafted to match WSU’s signature crimson red, establishes the museum as a beacon for the arts in the heart of the Pullman, Washington campus.

Located on the site of WSU’s former public safety building, the new museum incorporates some of the old structure for an expanded footprint totaling 16,000 square feet. The design consists of two distinct parts: the first serves as an informal entry to the museum, functioning as a flexible, casual space for hosting temporary exhibits and events. A glass panel garage door opens the space to the larger campus, encouraging students to gather.

The second space is the “Crimson Cube,” a climate-controlled space that houses the formal galleries and is enveloped by the crimson façade. The mirrored glass façade reflects and weaves the building into the campus as much as it announces the presence of art, creating an ever-changing visual interplay. Intended to inspire and engage – much like the art housed within – the “Crimson Cube” reflects sky, campus and students themselves.

Jim said, adding that the opportunity to create a building for the campus and the entire region that is dedicated to sharing the power of art, and the spirit of creativity that art embodies, means a great deal to me. It is a testament to the cultural commitment WSU holds for its family of students and the broader community.

워싱턴 주립대학교의 조던 슈니처 미술관

워싱턴 주립대학의 조던 슈니처 미술관은 예술을 대학생활과 인랜드 노스웨스트 지역의 중심에 가져다 놓는다. 반경 370km 내 유일한 순수미술 미술관이라는 점을 고려해 디자인총괄 짐 올슨은 강렬한 시각적 매력을 발산하며 관심을 불러일으키거나 영감을 주는 건물을 디자인하고자 했다. 그 결과 탄생한 반사 입면은 대학의 상징적인 붉은색과 조화를 이루며 미술관을 워싱턴 주립대학 풀먼 캠퍼스 한가운데 자리한 예술의 보고로 완성되었다.

옛 대학 공공안전관리단 부지에 세워진 미술관은 옛 구조물 일부를 활용함으로써 총 1,500m2에 이르는 면적을 확보했다. 디자인은 서로 명확히 다른 두 부분으로 나뉜다. 첫 번째 부분은 가벼운 분위기의 미술관 입구 역할을 하며, 특별전시나 행사를 수용할 수 있는 유연하고 편안한 공간을 제공한다. 유리 패널을 적용한 차고문은 넓은 캠퍼스를 향해 공간을 열어주며 학생들을 한자리에 모이게 한다. 두 번째 공간인 ‘크림슨 큐브’는 냉난방 설비를 갖춘 시설로, 정식 갤러리가 들어서 있고, 붉은색 입면으로 둘러싸여 있다. 반사 유리 입면은 주변을 비춰주며 건물이 캠퍼스와 서로 어우러지도록 하는 한편, 이곳에 예술 작품이 있음을 알리고 변화무쌍한 시각적 상호작용을 연출해낸다. 내부에 전시된 예술 작품들처럼 영감을 주거나 관심을 불러일으키도록 설계한 ‘크림슨 큐브’는 하늘과 캠퍼스 학생들의 모습을 담아낸다.

짐 올슨은 “대학 캠퍼스와 지역을 위해 예술의 힘과 예술 작품이 담고 있는 창조정신의 공유를 목적으로 하는 건물을 짓는 작업은 내게도 아주 뜻깊은 일”이라며, “이 미술관은 학생들과 지역 사회를 향한 워싱턴 주립대학의 문화적 노력의 증거”라고 전했다.
