Sky living room volume and the way to put the building on a slope

Neungpyungni House is designed to separate and lift up the volume of the house from the sloping land to preserve and enjoy the natural value in the inclined land environment. This is because the shape of pure architecture can be effectively incorporated into the uneven terrain of nature. The main rooms of this house are placed on the second floor and are hung in a simple rectangular shape in the sky. In other words, it is a sky lounge made with a cantilevered structure with an empty bottom, and the effect of a living room hanging in the sky is further maximized. This was the best strategy to acquire space independence and a dramatic view, and to maintain a solid and simple external volume even in a sloping condition. In order to preserve the value of the lifted upper part, it was important to be sure that the section on the sloping ground was effectively connected to the ground. The materials and colors were selected to distinguish from the curved main entrance from the upper part.

Attitude about the near view and distant view

The site is an uncomfortable slope with a peculiar shape that is narrow and long from east to west along the road. The mountain was blocked the south, so there was no enough sunshine. In order to create a minimum garden, the building should have been placed as far on the north side of the road as possible. Since there was a spectacular view far away through the eastern valleys, the living room on the second floor is suspended in the sky toward the east to provide the best dramatic view. The movement flow from the porch to the living room may seem to be a somewhat distant layout plan, but the panoramic view that comes across the core space of this house creates an unexpected experience. If a family spends a lot of time in the living room and the library, it is quite natural to have a sky lounge with the best view in the house. The family can also enjoy the landscape as a background in the main bedroom and the children’s room.

Space features that determine the prestige of the house

Unlike the elevator hall or the low porch in a collective dwelling, we tried to create an abundance of vertical space originating from the hall with a high ceiling, the formality of the open staircase, and openness toward surrounding areas to have the prestige of a private house from the entry. In particular, if we pursue only functional convenience, we will lose our four-dimensional relaxation to acquire time and the visual abundance to connect with the outside from our residential space. However, this house maintains the minimum volume by looking distinctive from the surroundings and pursues an open and lifted value of the architecture.

하늘거실 볼륨과 경사지에 건축을 놓는 방식

능평리 주택은 경사지의 대지환경에서 자연의 가치를 최대한 보존하고 누리기 위해 기울어진 땅으로부터 볼륨을 분리하여 들어 올리는 방식을 택한다. 그러면 순수한 건축물의 형상이 자연의 울퉁불퉁한 지형에도 효과적으로 관계 지을 수 있다고 보았기 때문이다. 이 주택의 주요 실들은 2층 평면에 놓이고, 단순한 직육면체 형태로 하늘에 매달려 있다. 즉 스카이 라운지인 셈인데, 하부가 비어있는 캔틸레버 구조로 놓이면서 매달린 하늘 거실의 효과는 더욱 극대화 된다. 이는 공간의 독립성과 드라마틱한 전경을 획득하려는 최선의 전략이었으며, 경사지 조건에서도 고상하고 단순한 외형 볼륨이 변형되지 않고 유지하기 위함이다. 상층부가 들린 볼륨으로 가치를 보존하기 위해서는 경사 대지에 접한 지층이 효과적으로 지반과 맞닿아 연계되도록 구현하는 것이 중요했다. 곡선형의 주출입구, 상층부와 차별되는 재료와 색채로 결정되었다.

가까운 전경과 먼 전경을 향한 태도

대지는 도로를 따라 동서로 좁고 길게 놓인 특이한 형상의 불편한 경사지이다. 남측으로는 산이 가로 막고 있어서 일조가 충분치 않으며, 최소의 정원을 확보하기 위해서는 북측 도로변에 최대한 건축을 붙여 배치해야만 했다. 동편 골짜기 사이로 멀리 귀한 전경이 존재했으므로 동쪽을 향한 하늘에 2층 거실을 매달면서 최선의 드라마틱한 전경을 획득한다. 현관에서부터 거실로의 동선이 다소 먼 평면배치로 느껴질 수도 있으나, 이 주택의 핵심 공간을 다 가로지르고서 접하게 되는 탁트인 전경은, 기대 밖의 경험을 제공받는 과정이다. 가족이 함께 거실과 서재에서 많은 시간을 보낸다고 치면, 이 주택에서 가장 좋은 전경을 가진 곳에 스카이라운지를 두는 것은 지극히 당연한 일이다. 상대적으로 안방과 자녀 방은 가까운 전경을 고요하게 차경하여 누리게 되므로 침실의 배경으로서 적절하다.

저택의 위신을 결정하는 공간적 특징

집합주거에서의 옹색한 엘리베이터 홀이나 낮은 현관의 경험과는 달리, 개인 저택으로서의 위신을 지닌 중심 공간을 진입부에서부터 누리도록, 높은 층고의 홀에서 비롯되는 수직 공간의 풍요와 열린 계단의 조형성과 주변을 향한 개방성을 확보하려 했다. 특히 기능주의적 편리만을 추구하다보면 잃어버리게 되는 우리네 실용적 통속 주거공간에서부터 시간을 획득하려는 4차원적 여유, 외부와 관계를 잇기 위한 시각적 풍요, 주변으로부터 빼어나기 위해 최소의 볼륨을 지키며, 열리고 들린 조형의 가치를 이 주택은 추구하고 있다.
