RED SCHOOL/ KAWA DESIGN

Jeongmin Seok

Concept _ The space where students can study with five senses. The place that students feel comfort in an atmosphere of freedom. When we took designing "Red School", these were priorities to consider. The place for students emphasizing accessibility rather than architects' ambition. In essence, this school is the medium that connects students with nature.

Arrangement _ Site is placed in the middle of stream with an island. Visual landscape on main access bridge to west adjoins green space while the nature of south and east is distinctive. L-shaped arrangement centered on the main square is suggested in an effort to increase relationships and harmony between nature and three sides. In a sense, school is adjacent to green space in west and accessible to distant view of east and south simultaneously.

Mass _ Dormitory is spatial composition of mutual intersection of sheer mass and nature. The place for relaxation (or meditation) where students can feel the nature within serenity. Likewise, students can perceive scenery while they study in lecture hall. Space among halls' connections correlate nature, building, and people. Students meet interpenetration of nature in spare moments of the building and organized mass.

Space _ The space is meant to be second home for students. Which means the school leads students into the warmth and safety of the house. Timber inside depicts warmth, placidity, and natural beauty interspersed thorough the windows. Students are to see and to feel mother nature every moments they spend in this space. Garnished space with colors modifies spatial detail which creates diversity.

Materials _ Considering students' vigor activity and noise, we used concrete which provides stability and sound insulation. On the other hand, relatively noise-free dormitory is made of tibia wooden structure regarding students' health. In order to enhance coherence among the nature, visual impressions, and material, pine pattern bare concrete is used for exterior. Similarly, choosing trees for interior material brings harmony between exterior space and the nature inside.

Landscaping _ Using corridor stimulates accessibility, and visual effects, and relations among three sides (west, south, east). Nature in space between portrays harmonic beauty with the patterning faculties of human consciousness. It also emphasizes humans are organic and social animals that require close relationships with the nature and other people. Sound proof planting and stone around the main square allow students to do various activity within nature.

아이들이 오감으로 느끼며 공부할 수 있는 공간, 사고와 행동을 묶어두지 않으며 밝고 가벼운 마음으로 사용할 수 있는 공간, 아이들에게 친절한 공간이 바로 이 학교 설계의 화두였다. 아이들이 보기에 좋고, 사용하기 좋으며, 호기심을 자극할 수 있는 공간과 자연과의 관계를 맺어주기 위한 고민으로 설계가 시작되었다.

대지는 개천이 흐르는 중앙에 섬과 같이 위치하고 있다. 서쪽으로 주 진입으로 사용될 다리, 녹지공간이 접해있으며, 동쪽과 남쪽의 자연은 부지와 멀리 떨어져 있다. 자연과 적극적인 관계를 맺고, 세 동 간의 관계를 맺어주기 위하여 중앙 광장을 중심으로 ㄴ자로 배치하여 서쪽의 녹지공간과 인접하고 중앙광장에서 동쪽의 원경과 남쪽의 장군봉을 담아 볼 수 있도록 사이를 열어주며 배치를 구성하였다.

아이들의 휴식공간인 기숙사는 간결한 매스에 자연이 관입하는 형태로써 구성하여 편안하고 차분한 가운데 문득 자연을 느낄 수 있도록 구성을 하였다. 강의동은 아이들이 자연을 바라보고 느끼며 공부를 할 수 있어야 한다고 생각하였다. 각 동들의 사이 공간을 통해 자연과 관계를 맺을 수 있도록 매스는 그 공간들에 반응하고 관계한다. 자연과 적극적으로 관계를 맺도록 방향성을 부여하여 주었으며 그 사이에 자연이 관입할 수 있는 틈을 마련하고, 그 매스들을 하나로 잡아주는 형태로 매스를 계획하게 되었다.

안전하고 자연을 느낄 수 있는 편안하고 따뜻한 공간, 감성을 자극할 수 있는 공간을 구성하고자 하였다. 내부는 목재를 이용하여 전체적으로 따뜻하고 차분하게 구성을 하였으며, 창을 이용하여 사이사이를 열어주고 그 공간들을 이용하는 사용자는 순간순간 자연을 느끼게 된다. 언제나 자연을 바라보며 자연을 느낄 수 있는 공간이 마련되어 있는 것이다. 공간에 색채를 이용하여 포인트를 줌으로써 부분적으로 공간감을 변화시켜주며 이용하는 사용자가 다양한 느낌을 느끼고 생각할 수 있도록 공간을 구성하였다.

아이들의 활발한 활동이 일어나며 서로 간의 차음이 중요한 강의동은 콘크리트를 이용하여 시공하였고 기숙사동은 비교적 소음이 적은 공간이고 아이들의 건강을 위해 경골목구조를 이용하여 시공하였다. 외장재는 송판무늬 노출콘크리트와 나무를 이용하여 주변 자연과 시각적, 재료적 관계를 맺을 수 있도록 하였고, 내장재 또한 나무를 사용함으로써 외부의 공간감과 자연이 내부로 스며들 수 있도록 하였다.

세 동의 적극적인 관계를 위하여 회랑으로 이어줌으로써 사용성과 시각적인 효과를 높여 주었으며, 건축물 사이 공간에 자연을 끼워 넣어 자연과 유기적으로 관계를 맺을 수 있도록 고려를 하였다. 중앙 광장은 아이들이 다양한 활동을 할 수 있도록 열어주고 주변으로 식재와 석재를 배치함으로써 전체적인 학교 공간 어디에서나 다양한 자연을 느낄 수 있도록 계획하였다.
