SOYUL which kywc architects has eventually constructed as its company building 20 years after its foundation, is nestled at the foot of Namsan Mountain. The wish of the architect who wanted to have his office in an old town near downtown is well reflected in SOYUL which has found its place in an alley in Huam-dong. Embracing the traces of the modern era, the Huamdong area gives an opportunity to closely observe the apparent spatial archetypes of our city, such as a natural geographic feature represented by Namsan, a large-scale facility like a railway station and a U.S army base, a grid-based new downtown area, a winding alley and so on. This particular area is the right place to take as the starting point of a journey for defining the identity of architecture and city.

In terms of site area, the smaller was better. Making good use of a small piece of land. That is the one of shared objectives in this era. Selected after careful consideration, the site had an area of 30.3 pyeong. The size was exactly what had been desired. Its proportion that elongates the lot to the east-west direction, its location in an alley with clear visibility on main roads and a small park across the road were also satisfying. The plan was to run an office with a team of 10 people or less. So, though the building might be small, we thought there would be an enough space where all our staffs can work together using the same floor. Additionally, we wanted a separate library and a small meeting room. However, what we truly wanted to have most was a social space. we wanted a space where staffs, fellow architects and friends can talk face to face and share their ideas. Architecture is important, yet socializing is more important. That’s what comes into my mind more often as I grow old. Along with the social space, a multipurpose event space was also needed. A large space with a high ceiling would be useful to host various events like seminars, exhibitions and performances.

With a limited building height of 8.7m determined by the architectural slant line restriction for daylight, we designed a special structural system to have three floors and, at the same time, to secure a maximized ceiling height. The entire 2nd floor itself is built as a truss structure, and this helps to reduce the number of structural members for other floors to a minimum. The structural system corresponds to the program of building and its relationship with the city. Exposed toward the city, the 1st floor is based on a minimal structure having 3 vertical load-bearing columns and lateral load-bearing braces. Thus, its inside and outside can be opened wide. Designated as a socializing space, this area consists of a lounge with tables, an indoor garden with plants growing beneath the ceiling and a kitchen.

Composed with a truss system that works as a structure and background for the interior space, the 2nd floor office appears as a single open space with no partitions. It has work stations for 9 staffs and a large table for meetings or model makings. In the 3d floor office, small 5cmx10cm posts are standing at regular intervals, and they help to rearrange the space as needed based on a modular system. A library and meeting room space is added as well, and on one side, a ‘house-in-house is installed. Well organized with a

wooden mass, this small house is hiding a private place for the architect. An event hall in the basement is enveloped by a concrete podium which is designed to flow with the shape of the site. A truss system suspended from the high ceiling of event hall is turned into a mezzanine floor which provides a multipurpose space. On the roof top having a panoramic view over Namsan, there is a small courtyard and a nice little patio. The patio’s interior space which is a little larger than 1 pyeong becomes a tearoom and meditation space.

Each one of 6 levels from the basement to the rooftop garden has its own spatial characteristics. Used as an exterior cladding, white spandrel glass completes the surface of the entire building volume, and a red structural framework describes the flow of load with lines. The building has a simple outline, but as its program and structural order differ by level, the facade and interior space of each floor transforms in various ways accordingly. Through the architecture of ‘SOYUL’, we wanted to combine structural, programmatic and city-architecture systems into one integrated ‘architecture’. Most of all, we wanted to fill the space with a life in which work, socializing and play find a happy balance. Text offer: KYWC Architects
