This project was realized thanks to domestic corporate support as part of the project Moving Creative Class in Haja Center (officially titled Seoul Youth Factory for Alternative Culture, entrusted by Seoul Metropolitan Government). Education planners, architectural educators, and urban planners collaborated with primary school students, with such philosophy as to let children play the main role in education.

The site was finally determined through reinterpreting the concept and exploring the site. The site is a garden, a stairway in front of a rooftop, and a backyard. The way to determine the location of the team ‘Relaxation’ and the team ‘Memory’ was differently progressed.

According to the explanation of an accompanying teacher, the garden was selected through an immanent agreement and consideration to make the space for juniors by seniors while the stairway in front of rooftop was selected by a majority of votes after each team member explained his or her meaning and method about ‘leaving memories behind’ through design sketches, panels, and models that were mentioned in the team ‘Memory’. Once the weak point of a majority of votes, a minority opinion, has occurred, the original plan was changed, but, it ended up like that realization at the stairway in front of the rooftop is available without eliminating the minority opinion by the help of a suggestion by an accompanying teacher.

The backyard started to be considered as a good place for ‘Geeking out’ in the team ‘Relaxation’, and the team imagine the place as chairs using walls and a quiet hideout behind walls. The backyard is the area where two different concepts have been mentioned and both teams imagine together as the consensus about necessity of relaxation is intersecting the imagine of utilization of spatial element, ‘wall’.

Architects understood the design intention which exploits areas’ features where relaxation and memories are existing based on first and second sketch, and third model of children. They have constantly questioned about what kind of meaning the places have based on their location, size, height and direction. Now, these spaces were created.

The school is children educational facility by the elder with maximum safety and minimum design. Like house is bowl which life is put and microhistory that creates a bromance exists in company at the center of company, there are always people who live at any spaces and any location. Spaces and locations have a relationship with people, are reinterpreted, are transformed, and become the part of life. In school, children continue to live. They pass by entrance, schoolyard, stairway and corridor, and then arrive at classroom. On the way to classroom they say hello to their friends, see trees, feel seasons, face stairway with deep breath, and maintain stability of all today seeing classroom. School is the life of children.
