Guelmim Airport

The new Guelmim Airport is situated in an existing military infrastructure located 3km north of the city of Guelmim in the south of Morocco. Led by the difficulty to realize such a project in this tough surrounding, the idea was to design a building that would be as simple as possible, very flexible, expandable, energy efficient and cost efficient. In this beautiful landscape, with a large horizon and these mountains on both side, it was obvious that this small building couldn’t compete facing this huge nature.

Therefore, we decided to handle it as if it was a piece of land art and conceived it as a colored mark in the landscape. The more simply the gesture, the more efficient it would be. A clear horizontal building was the best way emphasize the beauty of the horizon and the shape of the mountains. From the inside, the users had to keep the view to the surrounding landscape. Thinking about the function of an airport is like drawing a limit between two zones separated by a control zone.

Extensibility and flexibility being the prerequisite for a sustainable project, we designed a linear box, parallel to the runways, made of two halls with long span roof(21m), releasing the ground from unnecessary construction elements and a low filter area in between, situated under an accessible patio garden. The flexibility of use and modularity are essential components of this flow machine that is an airport. Indeed, the movements of the passengers and their controls can change over time, according to national and international safety rules as well as technology development.

So the idea of a limit is present everywhere, from the master plan to the cross section of the building. The natural light had to be present everywhere, that’s why we designed a glass box with a protective skin. This skin made of perforated metal panels is held in a distance from the glass facade by the large roof overhang, which also helps to provide the sun shading for the outside areas. The light coming from the roof terrace is also filtered by the white fabric elements on top of it. So the intention of saving energy by reducing the direct sun impact brought us to design the element that would define the character of the project. Associated to naturally precooled ventilation, the building assures comfort and low environmental impact.

The choice to use a metal facade is also the idea of emphasizing the incredible spectrum of different light qualities, by reflecting and playing with the elements. The ubiquity of geometrical patterns in the region had to be included somehow in the design of the facade. It took some time to define how different patterns, with different scales of perception, would be integrated into the conception of the metal skin. From various distances, according to different light situation, the visitors will perceive different patterns that will clearly suggest a link to the decorative theme of local culture. Directly inspired by local materials in handicraft, food, clothes, but also by the surrounding nature, the soil and the mountain, the color of the building had to strongly suggest a deeply integrated project. However, the strong colors had also to contrast with the blue sky, in order to keep the idea of a mark in the landscape.

굴 임 공항

새로운 굴 임 공항은 모로코 남쪽의 굴 임 시에서 북으로 3km 떨어진 곳에 있는 군사 시설이었다. 이러한 주변 환경에서 실현하기 어려워,

가능한 단순하게 건물을 디자인하였다. 매우 유동적이며, 확장 가능하고, 에너지 효율적인 동시에 비용 효율적인 건물을 설계하는 것을 목표로 했다. 아름다운 경치 속의 넓은 지평선과 양쪽에 산이 있고, 그 가운데 작은 건물이 이 거대한 자연을 마주하기엔 상대도 되지 않는다는 것은 너무나 뻔한 것이었다.

그래서 마치 땅 위의 예술품처럼 다루기로 결정하고 주변 풍경에 있는 색깔이 있는 점이라고 생각하였다. 형태는 간결할수록 더 효율적일 것이다. 가로 형태의 건물이 수평선과 산의 형태의 미(美)를 강조해주는데 가장 좋은 방법이었다. 내부에서는 이용객의 주변 풍경을 유지해야 했다. 공항의 기능을 생각해보면 마치 두 개의 영역을 통제 구역으로 경계선을 나누는 것과 같다. 지속가능한 프로젝트를 위해서는 확장 가능성과 유연함은 반드시 필요한 조건이기 때문에, 직선 박스 형태를 설계하고 활주로와 평행을 이루고, 두 개의 홀을 장스팬 지붕(21m)으로 만들었다. 두 개의 홀은 불필요한 시공 요소들과 중간에 낮은 대공경계 지역으로부터 분리하고, 출입 가능한 야외 정원 아래에 배치했다. 사용의 유연성과 모듈성은 공항의 필수적인 요건이다.

국가 및 국제 안전 규칙과 기술 발전에 따르면 승객들의 움직임과 그들을 통제하는 방식은 시간이 지나면 바뀔 수 있다고 말한다. 그래서 통제라는 방안은 건물의 기본 설계부터 단면도까지 모든 곳에 있다. 자연광은 어디서든 비쳐야 하므로 유리 상자 위에 보호 외피를 씌운 디자인을 했다. 이 외피는 타공판으로 만들어졌으며 돌출 지붕으로 인하여 유리 파사드에서 거리가 약간 떨어져 있어, 외부 공간에 햇빛을 가려주기도 한다. 지붕 테라스에 내리쬐는 햇빛 또한 위에 설치된 흰색 천으로 걸러낸다. 이러한 직사광선의 영향을 줄임으로써 에너지를 절약하려는 의도가 이 프로젝트의 특징을 정의해주는 요소로 설계하게 만들었다.

자연스럽게 환기가 되는 건물은 안락하고 자연 환경에 적은 영향을 끼친다. 철재 외피를 선택한 이유는 이 요소를 반영함으로써 어마어마하게 폭넓고 다양한 빛의 스펙트럼을 강조하기 위해서이기도 하다. 이 지역에서 보편적인 기하학적 패턴은 파사드 디자인의 어딘가 들어가야만 했다. 이것을 금속 외피의 개념에 통합하기 위해 모양과 크기가 다른 패턴을 구분하는데 시간이 걸렸다. 다양한 빛의 상황에 따라 각각의 거리에 떨어져 있는 방문객들이 다양한 패턴을 감상할 수 있고, 지역 문화를 주제로 한 장식이라는 것을 알 수 있도록 했다. 공예, 음식, 옷에서도 지역 재료들이 곧바로 영감 되었지만, 주변 자연, 토양과 산으로부터 영감 받은 건물의 색상 또한 프로젝트에 깊숙이 통합되어 있음을 강하게 암시한다. 그러나 풍경 속의 점인 아이디어를 지키기 위해 파란 하늘과 색상 대비를 주어 강렬한 색상들을 사용하였다.
